What to have with steak?

So am bowing to pressure from the family to cook steak tomorrow as a lockdown treat. Got some lovely fillet to cook, but debating what to have with it. Wondering about chip shop chips, garlic mushrooms and chargrilled asparagus, courgettes and spring onions. What would you have with it? What wonderful delicacies am I missing out on?

Chunky chips. I love the McCain Gastro Chips which are very crunchy and delicious. Just those and a salad go best with a steak for me.

onion rings, buttery mushrooms....your asparagus sounds nice and I'd make a bearnaise to go with. Really nice big pile of salad too. Maybe a warm potato salad....but I would ditch the bearnaise in that case.

and dh has to have chips and processed peas....no, I don't know why.

I make onion rings like Ainsley Harriot used to on Ready Steady Cook...cut the onion into fine rings, soak in milk and then I cling flim the bowl and microwave it for about 4 minutes ...just to take the raw off the onions
Drain and shake them into seasoned flour and deep fry....they are really fine and really crisp. Polenta works too.

Asparagus is a good call as it’s the English asparagus season now.
Béarnaise sauce would be a good accompaniment with that.
I also like a scatter of capers and a disk of herb butter with my fillet steak.

A culinary match made in heaven is fillet steak served with cauliflower cheese.

I tend to pantry mushrooms and onions in the juices of the steak then add a spoon of Dijon mustard and creme fraiche to make a sauce, served with either chunky oven chips and peas, or mash and roasted Mediterranean veg.

Dauphinoise potatoes, garlic mushrooms, roast vine tomatoes and onion rings. And a peppercorn sauce.

Peas, nice chips and a portabello mushroom in garlic butter.

Also add garlic and butter to the steak pan juices while the meat is resting, and drizzle over

M and s do some delish beef fat chips, they're amazing. Then I would have roasted vine tomatoes and peppercorn sauce.

I make 'chips' but they are basically chunky chip shaped roast potatoes.

Loads of salt in the boiling water, chuck 'chips' into hot fat in a roasting tin in the oven.

Roast the asparagus rather than boil.

Do Ainsley's onion rings (thanks for that tip Laurie)

Fry mushrooms in the meat juices while the steak is resting.

I'd happily eat it without a sauce but a good peppercorn sauce would also go nicely.

Diced roast potatoes with rosemary & garlic or chips, sweat onions & mushrooms in butter with garlic & black pepper, either a nice salad or veg, I sometimes like a fried egg or a pepper or Stilton sauce (or even Stilton crumbled over the top while it rests - especially with a really good piece of steak like fillet, cook it and then wrap it in tin foil for about 10 mins to rest while you're doing the rest of it - relaxes the meat and makes it really tender).

Enjoy - I want steak now!!!

Sweet potato puree or regular potato baked in goose fat.

Or green beans with a bit of parsley and butter. Fresh and crunchy.

Or carrots and cream. Delicious.

Creamed spinach and sautéed mushrooms. Don't eat carbs so no chips!

Wow what a thread! Will pinch one of these ideas for our anniversary. Simple is best I reckon.

Funnily enough my OH said he fancied steak, we've not had steak in years, and I've decided on something simple (because I can't be arsed to complicate it) oven fries with loads of mayo, salad or frozen peas. I might fry an onion. That's it! My main worry is wether or not I cook the steak right. It's rump. I chose that over sirloin but now think I should have got sirloin. The reason I rarely cook steak is because it usually turns out tough.

We had fillet steak tonight. Buttered new potatoes, mixed veg and onion rings. Yum!

Our go to is chunky chips, onion rings, mushrooms and grilled tomatoes. Brocoli or string beans for something green. We then either do a garlic butter or a pepper sauce depending on the type of steak. With a fillet I'd just finish with your favourite flavoured butter and the juices from the pan deglazed with either a bit of alcohol or even just a touch of water from the kettle.

Chunky chips, roast vine tomatoes and rocket with a scatter of parmesan.
Possibly pepper sauce or maybe bearnaise.
