Home made Coleslaw with mayonnaise or salad cream?

I have both in my fridge. I also have white cabbage, carrots and red onion and some mustard I think. Will this be enough to make it?? Also do I need to add sugar or anything? Never made it before and trying to use up ingredients.

Whichever you prefer, or a mixture of both. Or you can do oil and vinegar if you don’t want it creamy. I always add an apple to my coleslaw

Mayo with a bit of naturalyogurt in it is my fave.

Like Magimedi, I do half and half mayo and yogurt, with a squeeze of lemon juice. I find it too claggy otherwise. I often add finely chopped apple too.

This is my go to from Phil thingy who was married to Fern. Obviously you can do it with just white cabbage.

¼ white cabbage sliced really finely
¼ red cabbage, sliced really finely
1 large carrot, sliced really finely
1 large onion, very finely sliced on the diagonal
6 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tbsp vinegar
Ground pepper

Mix the chopped vegetables together well.
Mix the mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar and pepper together and add to the veg.
Mix and leave for 30 minutes before serving.

You can always add a bit of water to thin the mayo.

I use white cabbage, carrot, apple and mix in mostly mayo with maybe 1/2tsp of wholegrain mustard. yum!

I use mayo but add a splash of white wine vinegar. Beware though. You'll never enjoy shop bought the same again Grin

My version has red or white cabbage, onion, carrot, celery and apple, all chopped small/shredded fine, held together with just enough mayonnaise to bind it. I don’t add anything else.

I’ve often made it for big buffets - there is never any left. And all the ingredients keep well so it’s good all year round.

That's guys I've tried a bit if everything I've got, think I've added too much mustard for ds so has a bit of kick but still taste lovely. Will add some of your suggestions as still have lots of ingredients to make another batch.

I do either mayo with custard, or a honey mustard dressing.

I use mayo, dijon, squeeze of lemon juice/splash of wine vinegar, I also cold- brine my cabbage for a couple of hours as it makes it really nice and crunchy.

I use mayonnaise for mine, but would accept salad cream, creme fraiche, yoghurt or a combination of. Please no apple though that would just be vile.

I used to do a bit of both. Also added apple.

I make it with plain yogurt and a bit of mustard to cut the calories.

I worked in a pub kitchen in the 1980s with a very popular carvery. I suppose it would be called a gastro-pub today.
Their coleslaw, prawn cocktail sauce and potato salad were all made with salad cream, maybe to avoid the oiliness of mayo or maybe just to reduce costs!
Anyway they were delicious.

mayo with custard ooh, you’re making me peckish!

Mild curry powder is a nice addition to coleslaw dressing.

I make a dressing of no fat fromage frais, wholegrain mustard and fresh lime juice

White cabbage
Red cabbage
Onion
Carrot
Chopped fresh herbs- thyme, dill, parsley, coriander- just whatever

Also sometimes use fresh beetroot and apple.

My coleslaw is much loved in our house. I just use mayo. Will it be improved by the use of natural yoghurt?
