We seem to be out of arborio.

Will pudding rice work as well?

Thanks

I've done it the other way round so I think it's fine - unless you're talking about Ambrosia in a tin. 😆

I used to about 30 years ago when you couldn't get arborio. It was fine I think Grin

Had half pudding rice and half arborio rice in the risotto I made on Monday.
Couldn't tell any difference between the grains at all!

Jamie Oliver says yes! I just watched him make risotto today (C4 keep cooking and carry on). Also pearl barley will work and so will paella rice.

You can totally make rice pudding with arborio rice. I've made stove top rice pudding Middle Eastern style with arborio and it's v nice so I would think the reverse would work.

Jamie Oliver may say yes but it is his fault I want Risotto rice like mad. I cannot even get pudding rice (except tinned variety). The only ones I can get are the microwaveable type. Boo hoo.

I did on Saturday as I had less Arborio than I thought. It made a really nice risotto if I do say so myself.

I’ve made rice pudding with risotto rice and would do vice versa at the drop of a shortage.

I’ve diluted a tin of evap milk to 2 pints for pudding, and condensed is that much thicker, so it’d surely easily dilute the same or better.
Hardly worth making a less than 2 pint rice pudding IMO - even that doesn’t last long in this house. 🐷🐷

Of course you can. There is no such thing as “pudding rice” supermarkets just label it that way because some people don’t know what grain of rice is good for which rice dish. Rice pudding, sushi and risotto require short grain rice. Spanish rice, rice as a side for Indian or Chinese food, etc require long grain rice. That’s all you need to know- short grain or long grain.

I always use pudding rice to make risottos! It's less than half the price and no-one has ever noticed. In fact, DSF once said how nice it was to have it made with the proper rice, and not long-grain. Grin

I've got a similar question, but about sushi.

My husband ordered a sushi maker kit for my birthday. You can click here to read more about this device. I love sushi with all my heart, but all our local Chinese restaurants are being closed.

We don't have any special sushi rice at home, only pudding rice. Can I still use it?

I understand that when you are used to eating high-quality sushi at a restaurant, it will be pretty hard to compete with that.

I thought sushi was Japanese- might be wrong, I have never eaten it as I don't eat meat or fish.
