Favourite non-sweet/indulgent stuff to make with kids

We've been enjoying baking stuff during self isolation - I find it therapeutic. However, I can't find much to bake that's not massively indulgent or full of sugar. I'd love to do bread but yeast is like hens teeth at the moment. All I can think of is cheese scones?

We made chicken nuggets this week, we used stale bread to make breadcrumbs and luckily had some flour leftover from pancake day, DC loved it.

Depends on the age group you are talking about but there's tons of stuff you can do.

Dorling Kindersley publish some excellent step-by-step children's cook books which include very good reliable recipes and cover all the basic techniques.

Ime children like things they can get their hands stuck in to, so how about meat balls, fish cakes, or veggie or bean burgers, which all involve shape-making?

Their own fish fingers (goujons) or breaded chicken?

Noodle soups or stir fries?

Wraps of various descriptions?

Pinwheel sandwiches?

Vegetable skewers?

Flat breads?

You can even make pasta if you have a machine or a rolling pin?

Flatbreads/ Tortillas - no yeast, just flour, salt and oil. If children are little you obviously do the frying pan part but the mixing, working and shaping the dough is perfect for children.

Also soda bread - uses bicarb instead of yeast. I used to make soda bread hedgehogs with mum when I was little, really easy and tasty!

How about home made scone-based pizzas? My mum used to make them on a scone base if she couldn't find yeast and they were delicious.

Herby/nutty/seedy/chilli flake cheese straws?

Home made popcorn is fun. Not baking but still good one to do with kids and not too unhealthy.

Ah I forgot their ages! 5.5 and nearly 3. We've done flatbreads, they were lovely!

Oldest has issues with coordination so using a knife or anything hot is tricky.

This is all a good start for inspiration though!

I'm trying to avoid using Amazon at the moment unless I need to and I've been trying to support independent sites who must be struggling – I got a delivery from The Artisans Choice theartisanschoice.com/ last week of bread flour and dried yeast – my son and I made bread, triple win, happy boy, great bread, I feel like a super Mum!

Anyone got any top kid friendly bread making tips?
