Can I make chocolate Easter eggs without a mould?

My DD is really hoping for a chocolate Easter egg this Easter. We live in India and since the country has been locked down, I won't be able to go out and get hold of one.

I have baking chocolate and various other baking ingredients and equipment, but no mould. Is there any way I can create an egg? It doesn't have to be large, even the size of a regular egg would be fine. She'd be fine with it being either hollow or solid chocolate. I do have a few real eggs left. Is there any way I could use one as a mould? Wash one well and coat half of it at a time in melted chocolate and slide it off?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would love to be able to do this for her if possible.

Do you have any balloons? Would that even work? Back of two large spoons?

Have you got any real eggs? And cling film or foil, If so wrap them and paint melted chocolate on half of two eggs to get one pair iyswim.

Thank you Hohohole, but sadly, I don't have any balloons. And no Kinder Joy either, or I could have used those as moulds. I don't think any of my spoons are the right shape. I've been racking my brains and eggs are the only egg-shaped thing I can think of in the house Sad

Angus, that could work! I have real eggs, cling film and foil. Under the circumstances, DD isn't going to be picky about how it looks. Thank you!

This might work. Blow one of the eggs, ie, make a small hole top and bottom of egg, use a straw to break up the membranes inside and then blow out the contents. Wash though with cold water. Tape up the lower hole. Use a small funnel to pour in melted chocolate. Allow to set and peel off the shell

Don’t use balloons. Trust me on this!!!!

Have you got foil? Make a mould with foil. Line with clingfilm.

BrownOwl"s idea is genius. I would go one step further and decorate the outside of the real egg shell and get your DD to crack open her egg. Bonus points for the surprise and double bonus for a solid chocolate egg instead of a thin shell.

Blow the eggs, as BrownOwl says. I’ve made chocolate eggs like this before.

In the distant past I’ve made chocolate eggs by blowing hen’s eggs & filling them - I imagine if you were careful you could make a hollow egg that way too.
Having said all that we can’t actually get hen’s eggs Grin

Oh lovely, another method as well! Thank you so much, BrownOwl and everybody else. I have a few hen's eggs left and I can try blowing one (and scrambling the contents). Thank you Smile

Another idea: you could make a sort of tiffin mixture with biscuits, chocolate, butter, cherries, syrup and then shape it into egg shapes and wrap in coloured paper or foil. It wouldn't be an Easter egg though, more of an egg-shaped cake!

That sounds delicious, Seventyone, but I have no syrup left. I'll try it some other time!

@WorriedDaughter1, you don't really need syrup, just the chocolate and butter should hold it together. We eat low sugar, so I never add syrup, and it always sets fine. I can give you the ratios I use if you'd like?

@Seventyone72seventy3 - this is a great idea - I think I will make some for my daughter!

notnowlater, could you please give me the ratios you use? It sounds like a tasty recipe to have, in general!

And how do you bold the font when you're replying to someone?

@WorriedDaughter1 - I may have been too hasty in my suggestion. This is the ratio I use for tiffin, BUT, on reflection, it's quite liquidy, and I usually put it in silicone moulds to make individual 'cakes'.

70g chocolate
45 butter
Melt together - I use the microwave in 30 sec bursts, or you could use a bain marie.

Add: crushed biscuits (approx 3 digestive/rich tea sized biscuits for this qty)
cranberries/raisins/glace cherries
nuts
mini marshmallows

This makes 6 smallish cakes. You can pop lolly sticks in the top once it's semi-set to make a cake-pop type thing.

You could try leaving the mix at room temp for a while, or fridge for 5 mins at a time, and see if it will set up enough to shape into an egg shape. Otherwise, it's yummy just as a tiffin!

OR - if you can get double cream, you could make a chocolate truffle mixture and form into egg shapes.

Use equal quantities of cream and melted chocolate, I would start with 50ml double cream and 50g butter. Chop chocolate finely. Heat cream to scalding point, pour over chopped chocolate, leave for a couple of mins, then mix gently. Leave in fridge to set, then use a spoon to scoop out and shape into eggs.

If I try either I'll let you know.

And you type the @ sign, and then the poster's username, and it should automatically bold them :-)

@notnowlater , thank you for the recipe. It's something DD will enjoy making in her kitchen experiments, since it contains all her favourite things!

I don't have double cream, or I could have tried that.

Thank you Smile

I'm not delicate enough for blowing eggs but I'd probably try and fashion something using a bowl? Pour melted choc in and swirl it round? Might be more round than egg shaped but if you made two halves you could put something in the middle before sealing up with melted choc.
