Making things go further ideas?(10 Posts)
Wondered if anyone fancied a sort of making things go further ideas type thread. I am about to commence my annual cooking for the lambing family and staff adventure, but without the option of instant access to what I need to top up on and when. So trying out a few ideas while I still have time.
We cannot get any online grocery shops now and shops are fairly bare. We may soon go into full isolation. We do have meat and hopefully veg, I would just like it to go further.
So. First trial. I had a pack of Lorne beef sausage meat lurking. I used half and made sausage rolls, bulked out with any old random veg and lentils. We had that with beans and tatties.
Other half I made meatballs, added a broken ciabatta from bottom of freezer and some spice to mix. Had that with pasta.
Then the left over meatballs are going in baked potatoes with salad.
Usually that would have made sausage rolls and that was all. So it has done well.
Open to all ideas to eek things out a little more and hopefully have someone to chat to doing similar.
I'm sorry if there is already a thread running, I searched down and couldn't see anything.
So a bit like the mumsnet chicken but on all foods ideas.......
Soups/stews with bones and broth type ends of meat and potatoes to thicken and little milk to make it more soup like (if you don't have cream)
Pies and pastrys of course for any odds and sods, or left overs
Add grated potaoes to pancake mix to make potato pancakes

I feel like I'm trying to be much more aware of what I'm doing and with what.
I'm not the best cook but I try.
My friend makes this amazing traybake for example, she calls cupboard traybake. But she just uses the ends of stuff and stale biscuits etc.
I'm not so good at that. Like the masterchef make a meal from scraps challenge. But for weeks and a lot of sheep and hungry people! ?
Using leftover stale bread to make savoury bread pudding - will throw in any odds and ends of ham, cheese, onions etc
Use leftover bones to make stock then do risotto with any leftover meat/ veg
Will make hash type dishes with potatoes and whatever meat is around
Frittatas are a good way of using up leftover roast veggies and cheese

Porridge made half milk, half water
Make garlic bread fingers with the end crusts from a loaf. Toast one side, spread with garlic butter, grill and cut into fingers.
Use stale bread for savoury bread pudding or bread crumbs for burgers
Put the thick ungratable Parmesan rind in soups to give them an extra flavour, or you can even make your own parmesan stock to add to risottos.

Just the sort of thread I was looking for. Almost started one of my own to get recipe ideas to get the most out of what we have in which may not add up to our usual meals.
I seem to have acquired a glut of peppers and veggie bacon I need ideas for but just general ideas so I’m not making (and eating) the same food every day.
I’m also lacking in confidence as although in the past I was a regular and confident cook I haven’t been in the habit of cooking regularly for about 2 years now for a few reasons, mainly health related.
Feel like I’ve forgotten loads. But I’ll also try to help if I can.
On that score op if you end up with sausage meat to use again maybe make scotch eggs? Especially if you’ve bread/breadcrumbs to use up.
Freeze crusts, eventually make bread pudding.
Naydia Hussein has a veg scrap soup in one of her books, basically use freeze every bit of veg you don't use, raw and cooked separate and make a curry soup. So peelings, stalks etc etc started a bag this weekend

What about frittata and other egg based dishes with peppers and veg bacon, quiches, etc. I also do peppers onions, ham and cheese stuffed into potato skins.
Thanks yea I have some eggs for omelettes/frittata but trying to eke out the eggs if I can
