Camping hot breakfasts- pre made oats and milk?

Tellingitlikeitisnt · 20/02/2020 22:15

DD off on DofE and needs to take stuff for a hot breakfast.
We have been toying with making up bags of oats that can just have hot water added and wondered about using dried milk powder plus maybe raisins and some sugar to make it more tasty?
Those premade packets are ok but we thought a home made one would be better and tbh we usually add hot milk to the premade packs not water but this will be too tricky when camping.

Any ideas how we can make it work

And ideas for easy evening meals that aren’t pasta with chopped pepperami and a small tin of sauce would be good too!

Why does it have to be a hot breakfast?

Beans?
Boiled eggs?
Sausages from a tin?
Bacon?

Not on DofE but on a Scout camp the group mixed oats, sugar and butter and gently fried dollops of the mixture on the lid of the trusty Trangia, to make a sort of flapjack.
Lots of energy for a day of hiking/cycling/whatever. Only problem is keeping the butter in good condition prior. Might not be too difficult in this weather!

I add boiling water to oats every day for breakfast. No need for milk. Cinnamon? Mashed banana? Chopped dried dates? Squeeze of honey? Bit of cocoa powder? Dollop of peanut butter or tahini? All options, all portable, all easy, loads of combinations.

If they are also taking a cooker why can't they cook ordinary porridge using UHT milk and oats? Maybe add some cinnamon and grated apple or fresh berries and syrup if they like it a bit sweeter.

For an evening meal cous cous is always easy. Add tuna, sweetcorn and some peppers for a v quick and simple meal. Quorn now also make a store cupboard vacuum packed pack of flavoured quorn pieces which are ideal served with noodles and some veg.

Yes that will work - and you could also try using coconut milk powder if you wanted to mix it up a bit - then you can boost it up by including chopped nuts, seeds, dried fruit.....eg raisin, date & walnut is lovely as is a mix of coconut flakes and dried banana pieces

For dinners, you can buy tins of fish in flavoured sauces - tuna is an obvious one but also look at things like sardines, mackerel, salmon etc - these can easily be stirred through pasta or noodles or you could get something like this www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/product/john-west-creations-tuna-with-wild-rice---lentils-indian-style-180g?catalogId=10241&productId=1037260&storeId=10151&langId=44&categoryId=275974&krypto=z5IQqLVN48TIClx9iNk%2BrvzDLAA2TyHrcTpiShHw6%2BqEuE8u%2BdcGdlZcIq42EA9KihCUvSdDaPvqLJ4%2BvxZEgCT6AmDFL28ZnMVQ1FAD4fqOUVnnmbv7GXz9y31nVxE9&ddkey=https%3Agb%2Fgroceries%2Fproduct%2Fdetails%2Fflavoured-fish-44%2Fjohn-west-creations-tuna-with-wild-rice---lentils-indian-style-180g - then she just needs to tip the contents into a pan, heat it up and serve with whatever she wants

Does she have to carry it in a backpack?

The Quaker Oat So Simple Cuppa Porridge sachets already have milk powder in them. If you get the golden syrup one, you wouldn’t have to add sugar either. www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/product/details/quaker-oat-so-simple-cuppa-porridge-golden-syrup-5x557g
Alternatively, your Dd could take sachets of hot chocolate powder to add to porridge. Look for sachets that contain milk powder and that you just have to add water to, such as the Cadbury one.
For dinner:
Instant mash (Smash) and Heinz Spanish beans www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/product/details/quinoa--grains---pulses/heinz-creationz-spanish-beanz-with-smokey-pepper-onion-250g
Falafel mix www.sainsburys.co.uk/shop/gb/groceries/product/details/granose-falafel-mix-120g and couscous

Just to answer questions-
DofE specific it has to be a hot breakfast

It’s five days carrying all your food so can’t have fresh food and need to be mindful of weight hence no cartons of milk etc.

Water and oats might be ok normally but it’s a bit bland and she wants to add calories as well as taste . Thinking dried fruit.

Can’t have nuts due to allergy in group

Dd did d of e, they ate cereal bars and made tea as the hot element. For dinner we bought the boil in the bag Indian dishes from the long life world foods section, there's no facilities for cooking and cans etc are heavy

This isn’t the time for performance parenting but making homemade versions of porridge sachets because you think it looks better. She needs quick and easy to carry, which premade sachets are.

She can add some interest herself, but it needs to be ready to eat ASAP - the oats in the sachets are finer than regular porridge so cook quickly and make a nice smooth porridge.

I’ve tried some posh ones Called Moma, which are instant, so just need hot water added - but they’re vegan so some varieties have nut milk powder. Others coconut. Check which nuts are off the table.

I did lots of this stuff when I was younger., Oats are beautifully creamy if you cook them “low and slow” for about 4 mins, without mil. If definitely bulk out with dried fruit, brown sugar and sunflower/pumpkin seeds. Cinnamon. Is nice for flavour and jam is nice if you can get some in individual tubes. You can add dried milk, but it never works that well I find, but do practice cooking porridge slowly for 5 mins, it’s becomes very. Creamy, particularly if you soak the oats overnight.

Dried instant custard, lemon meringue pie filling sachet; pasts n sauce packets (just add water, fine without butter), those packets of uncle Ben’s microwave rice/beans (boil in bag), Vacuum packed frankfurters,, Tibs of tuna salad, Smash, Stagg chilli for datn1 (then you don’t have to carry it fir ages!). Then there are all the Wayfarer meals.Malt loaf.

I’d highly recommend non stick Tangia pans too!

For an instant oats type breakfast you can just add dried milk/fruit and it will be fine. I do this for work.

Dried food packets are ideal for mains as light weight. take a look at Beanfeast Bolagnais. Really tasty and easy to make up, there are chilli ones too. Just add some pasta/ rice. We are all carnivores but will happily eat these.

The pre prepared sachets and tubs have dried milk in them. Also the instant porridge (just add hot water) has more processed oats than plain raw porridge oats that need 4 mins cooking on a hob.

My DD took the instant sachets and just booked water on the trangier. Worked brilliantly. You can add a sachet of instant hot chocolate if you fancy.

Just take the preprepared! And go for the big bowl option - she’ll be burning a lot of calories carrying a heavy pack.

Pancake mix for when they’re bored of porridge five mornings in a row! You only need to add water to it. Might have to decant it into a bag though to save on space. www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/290962886
Beanfeast bolognese is good even if they’re not vegetarian as it’s a really light weight and tasty form of protein that will keep without the need for refrigeration .

Go onto Amazon and look at Expedition Foods. Lots of choice of freeze dried sachets which you make IN THE BAG so no washing up, and many with 1000 calories per sachet.
Otherwise...
Prepacked porridge oats. Sachet of cinnamon. Dried fruits. Granola bars. For first day you could bring a wrap with sausage etc in tin foil. It won't last more than overnight.
Pitta, cheese slices, ham, wrapped in foil, put on grill rack or campfire. Bacon rashers, folded and skewered, done over campfire or similar until crispy, stuffed in a pitta.
Lunch can be something like pitta filled with BabyBel cheese or marmite in a tube,
Dinner could be prepacked cold pizza for first night (it won't last second day), or ready to eat lentils, pick up ketchup sachets from your local fast food place. Uncle Bens do a range that has some veg in and can be cooked on portable stove in under 5mins and of course ramen noodles.
Bring Haribo in small packs (quick hit of energy)
GetBuzzing also do 'no nut' protein bars, available on Amazon.

Heinz do a range of pouches called Creationz. Basically a range of flavoured pulses like dhal, Mexican beans, Spanish beans etc. You can get them in www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/301925091Tesco would be ideal as not too heavy, don’t need refrigeration and would give a satisfying meal along side a pouch of rice or couscous.
