How to cook a Tomahawk steak

Redtartanshoes · 18/11/2019 13:40

Ds has requested a tomahawk steak for Xmas dinner. I know... it was far easier and cheaper when he wanted nuggets and chips:

So. How do I cook it? Most things I’ve read online suggest BBQ. That is not happening.

Generally speaking we are rare(me)/med rare him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I dint want to make a twat of it

They're a PITA if you've not got a bbq. I've done them before in the oven by first pan searing the outside, and then putting in the oven with a meat thermometer. It's essentially like cooking a beef joint - although you have to allow for the bone (as this changes the cooking times). They're far better cooked on the bbq, but I've only managed that once due to weather conditions!

I nearly bought one but then realised I had no way of cooking it, it was bigger than any pan I own Shock

It’s beautiful on the bbq, but tbh for Christmas dinner I’d be inclined to get a nice fillet of beef and save the tomahawk idea for summer!

Why not a rib of beef, much more practical.

My butcher trimmed the bone down so I could actually fit it in the oven. Very hot seat on both sides in pan and then into oven to cook to your liking.
