Instant pot porridge

Inspired by the liven up my porridge thread I made some in my instant pot this morning. The recipe I used was 3/4 cup oats, 2 cups water, cooked for 5 mins and then thinned down with milk when done. It was cooked, nice consistency, but very bland, and barely edible. So much so I could barely eat it, it would have needed so much honey to sweeten it.

Does anyone have a different recipe that actually tastes nice.

You need to use steel cut oats, rather than the porridge oats you get in the uk

I use 50% milk, 50% water which makes it creamier. I then add dried apple pieces, raisins and cinnamon and leave it for a few minutes before eating it so the fruit can absorb a bit of the liquid. I have also done a soft fruit compote and just stirred it through. Nutella is also surprisingly nice stirred in after the porridge is done. Sometimes I just add golden syrup or brown sugar.

Aldi do nice porridge oats in a paper bag.

Do you cook it directly in the pot, and can you add sugar before you cook?

I actually tried it with mincemeat and flaked almonds this morning, which flavour wise was OK, I used a heaped teaspoon of mincemeat, but would have had to use 3 times as much to actually make it taste nice, so negating the health benefits.

I have been putting 3 frozen cherries, two desert spoons of mixed frozen berries with two tablespoons of water, I heat it up until warm and mash the fruit a bit. I add a heaped tablespoon of whole grain rolled oats and just stir it a few time. I am not cooking the oats then put in a bowl. Then I add a dessertspoon of coconut yoghurt (non dairy) and mix in. I add a sliced banana, then on top mixed nuts and seeds, pumpkin, sunflower seeds, gogi berries, two almonds, a walnut and a cashew nut. I have cut down on nuts as they are very fattening. I love my breakfast.

I use one cup rolled oats to 2 cups milk - in a bowl which I put inside the IP pot (which has 2 cups water in it)

Add a pinch of salt. Cant taste it but stops porridge tasting like wallpaper paste. I use one measure oats to 2 measures water and one measure milk. Creamy but not too creamy.

I have porridge oats with half water/half milk and no sugar or salt. Nuke for four mins, stirring at two mins.

Half milk half water as mentioned, some cinnamon, prunes, or Berry compote which in our house is just berries cooked in water until they're thick and beautifully purple and delicious.

Day 2 - burnt!!! I guess u need to put in a bowl. There was enough left to use, it tasted much better, espacially as I had cooked some diced pear and apple In brown sugar and cinnamon.

I'm confused about the bowl inside the instant porridge pot. Why not just have a big packet of porridge and put the portion in a reusable tupperware or pyrex jar?

I put into a sealable Tupperware
1 ramekin porridge oats
1 ramekin almond milk
Optional:
Chopped banana/apple/dried fruit
Sprinkle of cinnamon powder,
some seeds
Large tsp nut butter

Get to work + add 1 ramekin water (ideally from kettle
Microwave 1 -2 mins depending on temp of porridge and water.

You can add sugar/honey/salt if you want but I find with the above I don't need it.
