Chocolate buttercream

So I made a chocolate orange marble cake and it’s just a tiny bit dry. I thought I’d tart it up with chocolate buttercream - I’m sure when my mum used to make this, she just chucked some cocoa in with the icing sugar and butter, but all the recipes I’ve seen online say to include melted chocolate. I’m not the most experienced baker and this seems like a recipe for melted butter disaster... would just chucking cocoa in work, do people think? Does anyone else make chocolate buttercream like this? Thanks!

I make chocolate buttercream using melted choc, once your butter is not very very soft and you whip it up quickly it's fine, butter doesn't melt.

135g plain choc melted with 85g butter.

Mix and either pour over cake or allow to cool and then whip - becomes a sort of frosting and can be 'trowelled' on.

If you want a buttercream to end all buttercreams, this is the one:

Tiny bit more work, but it transforms a standard cake into something incredible. It is the most delicious flavour.

So I was a bit lazy and just added cocoa and tbh it’s not fabulous. Will try the melted chocolate method next time! That’ll teach me to take shortcuts.

Thanks everyone!

Next time if you make it with cocoa then try mixing it into a paste with a little bit of boiled water first, otherwise it goes all grainy.
