Chippie and Chinese style curry sauce at home

I like curry sauce with my fish and chips but haven’t found a good one that I can have at home. Tried the Bisto one but it wasn’t great.

Also my husband likes the Chinese takeaway style curry sauce and I haven’t been able to find one.

Any recommendations?

Have you tried McDonnell's? That's the closest instant one I've found to takeaway curry. I used to have a really good recipe for homemade curry that involved blending a load of onions and it was spot on but it was a bit faffy and I can't find the recipe now Hmm

Mayflower is good. My mum made me some chicken curry at the weekend with a really nice curry sauce I will try find out what is was called.

I used to love the Bisto one but bought some a few weeks ago and it was tasteless 🤮

Mayflower is great. Nice and cheap too.

Sainsburys do one in a jar that's worth a try.

Mayflower curry sauce is the best. I can find it in Heron, Iceland or B&M bargains. It is definately the closest in taste and texture.

I like the Bisto one but nowhere seems to sell it anymore. I have bought the McDonnels one instead but I've been too lazy to try it. It's much more of a faff to make it than just pouring hot water on.

I noticed nowhere sold Bistro too. A couple of years ago the only place I could every find it was Tesco and now the only place I ever see if is in a big bargain store in my town but it's an independent store not a chain. It's definitely not the same as it used to be so you're not missing anything.

Mayflower or McDonnells then. Looks like one is Chinese style and one is chippie style!

Thanks!

No I haven’t tried any except Bisto but we didn’t like it. I only tried it once though.

I wouldn’t mind making my own if it was good as I could then just freeze batches of it.

The ones in Asian supermarkets (gold packaging) are good too.

It freezes well so you could buy a vat of it from the chippy, portion it up and bung it in the freezer.

Another vote for McDonnell's here.

Yeungs Chinese curry mix in the packet is what the chippies round here use. Morrisons sell it. Great with chips imho.

I agree with PPs Mayflower for a good Chinese style curry sauce. I always add a lot more spices when cooking the actual chicken like tandoori and garam masala, then add big chunky onions and peas later on in the cooking to the onions still have the crunch that the Chinese curries do.

Asda do a semi-decent granule style chip shop curry sauce. Just add water, it's a decent compromise lol.

Wow thanks all

We just want as it a side. I would have chip shop style sauce with chips. DH has Chinese sauce with egg fried rice.

I’m making salt n pepper chicken with egg fried rice tonight and wanted to make him some curry sauce to go with it.

I have Aldi, Lidl and Morrison’s nearby so will see what I can find

Spicentice do a Chinese curry sauce spice mix, it's hot enough to make me weep but it tastes pretty damn close!
