Foolproof recipe for amazing cakes!

Next weekend is a significant birthday for my MIL and the whole family is going away to celebrate it.

Last time we did something similar I took along my 2 sure-fire cakes that always get a good reception (orange & white chocolate sponge and cherry bakewell cake - both from bbc good food) and they went down really well.

I want to do the same again but haven't been baking for a while so was hoping I could get some inspiration here!

BBC good food is my go to. I'm a decent baker but won't have time to practice anything before I make them on thursday. Not fussed about fancy decorations, just want something that looks nice and tastes amazing.

The Nigella Lawson Guinness chocolate cake is bloody amazing, dead easy to make and always gets rave comments made about it whenever I make it for family.
