I am reading a book at the moment which really sets me thinking about whether I really need to use a supermarket for my weekly shopping. What do other MNetters do?

Chirpygirl Thu 12-Jul-07 21:29:41

I use market for meat and veg weekly, supermarket for stuff in between and non food items.
My local shops are a Spar type and a nasty smelling paper shop and they are really expensive so I have to use the supermarket.

Market for fruit and veg, have to use supermarket for other things, there is nothing else here but, do use the butchers. Want to try that buylocal site soon tho'.

Work full time so one trip to a supermarket is necessary. Hate it. We then top up with our local corner shop for milk, bread (+ wine!) Wish I had time for market and don't fancy on-line.

Organic veg box/farmers' market/market/local shops for most things, and a Sainsbury's order every three weeks or so.

i shop locally in the supermarket?

muuuuummy Thu 12-Jul-07 21:35:16

I feel guily when I use the supermarket at the moment. - this sounds like a shrink session - sorry.

I do feel angry with the supermarkets though because they take from everywhere and just make huge profits - or at least that's how it can look.

Kathyis6incheshigh Thu 12-Jul-07 21:35:43

What's the book muuuuummy?

muuuuummy Thu 12-Jul-07 21:35:58

francagoestohollywood Thu 12-Jul-07 21:36:22

lol sea.
There's a fab farmers market here, where I usually buy vegetable and meet. I also go to supermarket though.

local for meat, vegetables and bread.
waitrose for all other groceries.

dh has his own shop which is threatened by some of the supers so I try to get as much as I can locally.

mummypigoink Thu 12-Jul-07 21:36:39

I use local shops as much as poss, but do have a supermarket shop for heavy stuff/ the stuff that I can only buy from the supermarkets local versions.

I am really lucky that I have a lot of local shops within easy walk of my house. And I think it's good for the kids to actually go out the house and meet people (until I'm in the shops and they are being really naughty!)

Triwizardcupcakes Thu 12-Jul-07 21:37:25

There's another very good book on the subject called Shopped.

muuuuummy Thu 12-Jul-07 21:38:19

Best of luck to Triwizardcupcakes DH, hope shop goes really well and goes from strength to strength

Kathyis6incheshigh Thu 12-Jul-07 21:44:14

Not On the Label and Bad Food Britain slag off supermarkets as well. Don't read them, muuuummy

muuuuummy Thu 12-Jul-07 21:45:15

Do we care if it makes a difference to shop locally.

What do your local shops offer you - are there any left at all?

MarsLady Thu 12-Jul-07 21:48:17

I use the farmers market when it's on. Local shops are Londis etc and not very good. Used to use a fab greengrocers but he sold up. So it's the supermarket for me when I can't get what I need from the farmers market.

PeachesMcLean Thu 12-Jul-07 21:48:46

I'd LIKE to shop more locally, just because it's not centralised supermarkets but our local shops are so ropey. the greengrocers are fine if you want the basics, but even then the broccoli can be limp and the bananas brown. If they're selling such exotic produce
however, I've just come back from Italy where the fresh produce in the supermarkets was Amazing - I truly wish I had one of those nearby.

TheArmadillo Thu 12-Jul-07 21:49:18

Do veg/fruit shopping locally (have good local greengrocers), though I do buy some bits at supermarket to save me going shopping for a couple of days.

We don't have any local butchers that I can find though or fishmongers, so I go to supermarket.

vonsudenfed Thu 12-Jul-07 21:50:18

I read 'Shopped' and really changed our shopping habits as a result! So beware!

We get veg + milk + various other bits from the organic box scheme, and sometimes get meat from them.

Here, we're amazingly lucky, as we have a farmers market co-operative which delivers weekly - so bread from local baker, yoghurt, cakes (mmm, cakes), meat, all sorts. Thye also do pasta and olive oil from an Italian co-op. But we could get this from farmers markets/delis if we tried.

We then top up at the farmers market, organic veg stall, local shops, the Co-op.

And about every 3/4 weeks, go to the supermarket for cat food, frozen peas, toilet roll - I try not to get meat or veg, but only the products of big cos that can afford to be pissed about by the supermarkets. And then I buy the occasional treat and feel guilty.

vonsudenfed Thu 12-Jul-07 21:51:22

And yes, local shops do work - the car was broken down for a whole ten days, and I survived in our slightly run-down market town better than I'd expected!

mummypigoink Thu 12-Jul-07 21:51:25

Can get pretty much most things locally.
