How do I make this meal less spicy?

I have made beef with broccoli for this evening's dinner. I followed a recipe, it is in my Instant Pot, and on 'keep warm' for when the family arrive home.

I have just tasted it and it is far too spicy for my palate, and I know that the children won't cope with it. It called for 1 tsp of red chilli flakes, which is what I have used.

How do I came the heat down? I don't really want to use yogurt/cream/milk, as it is a Chinese-type sauce, and the dairy element won't go well with it.

What else can I use?

Many thanks.

Mix it with fresh cream double or single.

If you don't want to mix it with anything then I would have plain yoghurt and milk as side bits to take the edge off

Could you get ingredients to make a second pot with no chilli, then combine the 2 and freeze half?

Sorry didn't read the full post. I would then suggest you redo the sauce its accompanied by. If that is possible take the water out and change the water and add all the other ingredients in again might taste a bit odd though

Adding some acid (citrus or vinegar) is meant to help tone down the heat of chilli.

Will you be serving with rice? You might find that it's not so bad when it's mixed together.

for Chinese type sauces a spoon of honey or brown sugar will help reduce the heat

lemon/lime or teaspoon of sugar

possibly some coconut milk

I was going to suggest coconut milk.

You could also do an egg fried rice to go with it and up the amount of rice you would normally serve, reduce the amount of beef and mix it together to spread out the spice a bit. Then fridge/freeze leftovers if you aren't using as much.

You could also drain off a lot of the sauce where the spice will be and just add a bit more water.

Honey!! Works quite well, big squeeze, mix and taste

Could you take 25% out then add the same quantity of a non-spicy ingredient, like chopped tomatoes, if they're in there. Serve with plenty of rice.

What Chewbecca said. Make another batch with no chilli and mix. That ought to work. Sadly not all chilli flakes are created equal in terms of heat. I’m a proper chilli head and have to be careful cooking for other people as what tastes fine to me nearly floors othersGrin

A little sugar or honey will calm it down.

Thanks for the tips. I don't have any more beef (and can't get out to the shops) so can't make another batch - although I think I will mix up some more of the sauce and add it to the current batch, to tone it down a bit. I will also add some honey (there is brown sugar in the sauce already).

It will be served with rice, so hopefully that will make it blander. I also have plain yogurt, so will serve it on the side for people to have if they want, rather than mix it in.

I don't mind a bit of spice and heat - but this really is a on another level at the moment!

Thanks everyone.
