I usually don't, just give them a wipe. My mother was horrified to learn this. What do others do?

Wipe, for sure. I'm a bit of a slattern by MN standards though.

No I never have unless they're particularly muddy!

I just pick the big bits of compost off.

babysharkah · 06/12/2018 18:19

No! They'll just absorb all the water.

Nope

Just wipe

Nope, just wipe if required. They should never be washed.

I don't even wipe them, just knock off the chunks of not-earth-but-you-know-what-I-mean.

I peel mine, very satisfying

Just wipe, if you wash them they'll absorb the water and go all slimy!

Mushroom compost is sterilised prior to use so I just wipe/ pick off the worst of it.

My DM peels them and is horrified I don't.

Nah, just give them a flick if they’re particularly soily. I’m a bit of a tramp though I don’t clean a lot of veggies

Life’s to short to wash mushrooms

Never, just wipe off any soil.
I don't wash fruit either and I'm fairly sure I've not died yet.

Notevenmyrealname · 07/12/2018 04:41

I rinse them under a running tap to get soil off but no more than that.

Report
Oblomov18 · 07/12/2018 04:42

I don't even wipe them.

No washing or wiping here. I do wash grapes though as I think they taste funny otherwise, I don't really bother with other fruit though.

Report
gastropod · 07/12/2018 05:25

I wash chanterelles/girolles as you can't get the grit out otherwise. But button/field mushrooms just need a wipe if there's visible dirt. If not I don't even bother with that!

You should wipe them with a damp kitchen towel, as they get waterlogged.

I wash them because of the soil, I know u r not supposed to but I couldn't use them without washing them, a lot of my relatives peel them

Nope, don’t wash or wipe. My mum used to peel them and is absolutely horrified I don’t, convinced we will all die but we haven’t yet Grin. Having said that she does not eat mushrooms anymore as she can’t be bothered to peel them any longer (being quite elderly does not help) and she doesn’t trust anyone else would do it right.
