Frozen mash

I know lots of people will be anti it but I am batch cooking for hordes at Christmas so going to try it..

If you are using it on a shepards pie - how do you add it?? Have made the filling today. Would you add the frozen mash now or on the day of eating? Do you defrost it first or add the pellets to the dish?? Sorry if these are inane questions, I have just never used it before.

Or do I just chuck the bag in the bin and peel some spuds??!

I just make it as if I was going to eat it and put it on the top before o freeze it. Otherwise it's a job to do when you get it out to eat and the whole point of getting something out of the freezer is so you don't have to cook.

I cook the mash in the microwave in a big bowl, add butter and salt if you wish then using a fork spread it on top of the mince. Put it in the oven and voila! So easy! I’d never go back to peeling spuds again 😄

Thank you both - so Savoy, you would defrost it then refreeze?? If I do say so myself, the mixture is delicious so I don't want to ruin it!!

I've tried lots of supermarket mash and don't like most of them, fresh or worse still frozen.
I don't like the Sainsbury's large container of mash. (Serves 4) I prefer their smaller one. (Serves 2)
I'd microwave quite a few of them, then put it in a big mixing bowl with butter, a dash of milk, salt and lots of pepper.

Thank you!! Clare I will do that as I have also realised that it will take up a hell of a lot less freezer space in a bag rather than a dish.

Oblomov - my guilty Friday night cooking sometimes involves Waitrose mash which my whole family loves (M&S or Sainsbury's not so much!!). I am hoping with Shepherds pie that the flavour is so strong that no-one will notice the frozen stuff... I am also planning on making a fish pie on the day but will boil spuds for that.

Questioning the logistics of having 14 in the house for four days!!
