I'm looking to start learning to cook Indian foods/curries but I have no clue where to start.

Does anyone know any websites/books/chefs?

Thanks

This is quite a good site
www.mamtaskitchen.com/

(You can’t go wrong with buying a jar of Patak’s paste and using that for a quick decent curry.)

Since sleep beat me to Meera Sodha, I will throw my hat in the ring for Madhur Jaffrey's Curry Bible. It is one of the books that never leaves my kitchen and every recipe works perfectly.

I like Anjum Anand

Another plus one for Meera.

I also really like mr todiwala's spice box, the spicy cottage pie is delicious!

Charmaine Sullivan's The Complete Asian cookbook has some great recipes from a range of countries. My Sri Lankan MIL was a big fan of hers.

Not as authentic, but pretty good for breadth is the Rick Stein India book.

Madhur Jaffrey Curry Easy

Another recommendation for Madhur Jaffrey. The recipes in "An Invitation to Indian Cooking" are more interesting than some of the ones in the newer "Curry Easy", I think, but still very accessible and designed to be useful to cooks new to Indian cuisine.

The great thing about Indian cooking (Jaffrey-style, anyway) is that once you have a good selection of Indian spices, and some fresh ginger and chillies, pretty much everything else is just basic store cupboard ingredients like onions, lentils, chicken, basmati rice, green vegetables, lemons, tomatoes, plain yoghurt, vegetable oil etc. It's comparatively rare for me to turn to her on impulse and discover that I can't make any of the recipes because I don't have half the vital and expensive ingredients (looking at you, Gordon Ramsay!)

I'm a Madhur Jaffrey fan too - I've got the Curry Bible and the Vegetarian version and both are fantastic. Recommended!

For vegetarians, the prashad cookbook
www.amazon.co.uk/Prashad-Cookbook-Indian-Vegetarian-Cooking/dp/1444734717/ref=nodl_?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

I have fresh India and tbh I haven’t been very impressed by some of the things I’ve tried. The curries aren’t the strongest, flavour wise. The paneer kebab recipes are awesome though.

Meera Sodha's books are the most used in our house of all my copious cookbooks.

Meera Sodha's books are great and very amusing into the bargain. I also have An Indian Housewife's Cookery Book on Kindle which is useful, not too complicated and not expensive.

Gurpareet Bains Indian Superfood is is really good and easy to cook, it may not be traditional Indian, but it’s really tasty, the chicken with banana and fenugreek is gorgeous. One problem is that it’s very badly bound, the pages fall out really quickly, I ended up deconstructing mine and putting the pages in a binder.

Another vote for Madhur Jaffrey, An Invitation to Indian Cooking is a classic, A Taste of India is brilliant (often found cheap in charity shops), it’s a bit more complex but the results are superb.

Treat yourself to a gift set from The Spicery. Four essential pots of spices plus a book of 80 recipes you can cook based around those spice mixes. It all tastes delicious and we've just topped up our spices as the recipes are so good.

The Prashad book linked to earlier is great (on a sidenote, the family who own the restaurant are wonderful people!).

Like others I use Meera Sodha a lot, another favourite in our house is Maunika Gowardhan - she has a cook book, a website and an app
