Hi you lovely people (well most of you by what I have read today BlushConfusedShock)
My DD is 5 years old and we have just worked out she is lactose intolerant, he dad is also. But from up to 4 she could have normal cows milk. Anyway I was just wondering if anyone has any lovely food recipes, snacks that would normally have milk in as a alternative. I know there is casserole etc but quick snacks etc. Dairy free from stuff is getting a bit expensive.

We use Pure or Vitalite margarine and oaty milk and then most recipes work. Easy to make your own cakes and biscuits. Lots of own brand food have no milk etc in, less likely in M&S. We aim for fortified cereals and my son has a soluble vitamin tablet with calcium each day (some baroca and Tesco own make).

Thank you. She does have the lactofree cow milk in the green cartons. But it's just hard when most things are quite expensive. Annoying that the ice cream van doesn't have lactofree/soya ice cream. She can only have ice lollies and she misses out on them (I know you can buy dairy free ice cream) but I mean the whipped ice cream from ice cream man.

She loves flapjack etc. But thinks like jammy dodgers and biscuits with chocolate in she can't have. But she won't eat dark chocolate 😩

There are some jammy dodgers she can have but I can't remember what brand. Tesco do nice dairy free cornettos and last I was out and about I saw a Swedish glase ice-cream at a small shop. Morrison have a good dairy free range.

Are you sure she’s lactose intolerant and it’s not the protein in the milk that’s causing problems OP? Most people seem to know about lactose allergy but Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) is actually more common. Have a read of this information from Allergy UK and see what you think Smile

Mrs Crimbles Coconut Macaroons are DF. Crisps and fruit are DF too Smile

Usually the cheaper the biscuit the more likely it is not to have milk in. So things like own brand Jaffa Cakes are usually DF.

The allergy section on MN can be good too Smile

Thanks for that Disfor. I’d forgotten I could eat those Smile

Are you giving her a decent calcium supplement too OP?

I find people overcompensate with treats as they think your child is missing out.

I find people overcompensate with treats as they think your child is missing out.. I totally agree and in all honesty, she really isn’t missing out on anything.

google "lactose free cheese recipes". Much cheaper to make your own! I've been enjoying a cheesy cream sauce lately made with mashed potatoes, a couple carrots for color, tapioca flour and 6 tablespoons of nutritional yeast, lemon juice and white pepper powder, avocado oil and lactose-free-milk. Found it on youtube.

Recipe sounds harder than it is. I've made it several times and now it only takes me a few minutes.

Avocado oil doesn't have much of a flavor, so it's perfect for cheese recipies. I use a bit more nutritional yeast than recipe says.

I developed lactose Intolerance with onset of age, and I use Oatly milk and it's absolutely wonderful. Oatly barista is what I make my coffee with, and it's creamy and much nicer then cow's milk.

Also you can take a digestive enzyme for this, I am a cheese monster and take lactase. Means I can stuff cheese in me gob to me heart's content.

Search for lactase enzyme or lactase drops on amazon and tons will come up.
