Coca Cola gammon in slow cooker recipe!

All of the recipes on the internet state I must use star anise etc. Is this essential? Just want some advice and other peoples recipes as all the usual chef recipes seem to be very fancy!

I never use star anise. I just pop my gammon in, cover in full fat coke and let it do its magic

Nigella’s doesn’t use star anise, just coke and an onion.

I don't use star anise either. The recipe I've used in the past is just coke and onions as Best said.

Never used Star Anise either, just coke and gammon.

Someone suggested to me that you can use Diet coke when doing it in the slow cooker but I've never tried that myself either.

I followed Jamie’s Christmas turkey gravy recipe one year and faithfully put star anise in. Bloody ruined it.
