How many bananas is too many?

5yo ds loves bananas and has quite a limited palate - well not limited if you make a list of everything he eats, a friend who is a child psychologist says it looks fine, but limited in that really he would prefer to only ever eat ham sandwiches, sausages, bananas, yoghurt and biscuits. He is wary of new food etc etc)

Anyway in his ideal world he would have a banana after his main breakfast of toast or weetabix (more foods that should be on above list - see, he is not that bad), one in his packed lunch, one after school and one before bed. I refuse as four is surely too many. Though he doesn't have poo trouble.

But health wise, any suggestions on how many bananas it is okay to eat in a day?

I should add it is in addition to his meals, not instead of meals.

My brother used to eat about 4 a day they do say about potassium and that they can constipate you, but I think you'd have to eat about 200 in one go lol

Google Freelee the banana girl- she once ate 51 in a day and has lived to tell the tale! Not sure she’s exactly a role model for your banana loving son though 😂

Bananas are great in that they contain fibre (so not sure where the constipation thing comes from), potassium and a number of other vitamins BUT they are higher in sugar and calories than many other fruits - plus if he is filling up on bananas (his "safe" food) then he's less likely to be willing to experiment with other foods...
In terms of how many it's OK to eat though...I'm not sure there's actually an answer to that ....

How strange my mum used to swear bananas bunged you up and oranges made you go more. Shock

I set my 4 year old an entirely arbitrary limit of 2 per day. There is no good reason for that particular number. It does encourage him to eat other foods too once he's reached his banana limit.

AnitaGreen - yes I always thought that

Bluechameleon - all my limits (bananas, biscuits etc) are arbitrary.
