What do I need to start baking?

I love baking, Iv made about 10 things in the past 3 weeks 🙈 just simple things like banana bread, biscuits, brownie etc. I want to make sure I have stuff to bake whenever I want. What do you keep in your cupboards.

Also! What tins/equipment do I need?

A round cake tin and a rectangular loaf tin will do you for most things. Perhaps a muffin tin for cupcakes and muffins.

I always keep self raising flour, caster sugar, butter and eggs. That's your basics. When you do the weekly shop each week you could pick one new thing from the baking aisle, eg candied fruit, chocolate chips, a gel colour. It'll be about £1 a time and you'll soon pick up a great selection!

Plain flour, self raising flour
Baking powder
Bicarb
Dried mixed fruit
Glace cherries
Soft light brown sugar
Caster sugar
Polenta - not essential though but we use it quite regularly in cakes
Almonds
Ground almonds
Vanilla extract
Almond extract

These are my store cupboard baking essentials - and buying eggs every week.

I'd go for a couple of sandwich tins
And a decent deeper round cake tin.

Maybe a tray bake tin - I rather like the look of those 'make any size you want' tins that they occasionally use on bake off.

And a decent sized cooling rack.

Do you just want to bake, or also to decorate?

For baking I’d start with
nest of mixing bowl
measuring spoons
Good digital scales
Flexible spatulas
Bowl scraper (really useful!)
1lb loaf tin
20cm loose bottom round tin
13x9” traybake tin (I have a great Wilton one with a lid that and I use this the most)
Good size muffin tins
Silicone baking sheet
Mary Berry’s Baking Bible (!)

Ingredients wise
Self raising flour
Plain flour
Baking powder
Bicarb
Cocoa
Vanilla extract (not essence!)
Caster sugar
Light muscovado sugar
Icing sugar
Stork (I much prefer it to using butter)
Chocolate chips

Oh yes, I forgot cooling rack

If you’re really into it I recommend getting a stand mixer with a paddle attachment (you can get cheap ones now but Kenwood are absolutely the best, even though Kitchen Aid are prettier!)

If you want to do covered cakes, get yourself:
A large non stick rolling pin
Palette knife
Scraper for buttercream
Cake smoothers
A turntable is really useful but not essential

I just use disposable icing bags and have a variety of piping nozzles, favourite ones at the minute are my “twist twist" ones

Golden syrup and ground ginger. I use those in a surprisingly high number of recipes.

Buy a large roll of 18 or 21” catering disposable. piping bags from eBay (ideally the non slip ones). You can always cut them down to size but they’re much better quality than supermarket ones. Ateco nozzles are great quality and very affordable. Grass nozzles (think it’s Ateco 122) are great for grass and hair, then a rose swirl tip and a big swirl tip should get you started.

If you want to pipe royal icing, I use a small Wilton reusable piping bag with a coupler and a variety of tip sizes.
