Food/recipes

So bored with our repertoire. What do you buy when you go food shopping?

I know it's been done to death here but have lost my food mojo.
We are eating the same things over and over again and when we go to the supermarket I am overwhelmed by the choice so end up buying the same things!
Both work ft with 2 children but some shifts so don't always need a speedy option.
Things we eat all the time...
Chilli with wraps or rice
Bolognese
Jacket potatoes
Pesto or tomato pasta with veg - one child won't eat cheese/cream sauce
sausage and mash
sausage and chickpea stew
roast chicken
omlette
lentil/minestrone soup
meatballs in gravy with mash or in tomato sauce with pasta
fish and chips/pizza/nuggets or some type of crap freezer option.
We also seem to eat a lot of tuna and cheese in some form or another.
What meals do you eat regularly that aren't on my list?
I'm dreading going shopping later today!

I feel the same OP. I'm using Ocado's recipes and shopping lists currently to try new recipes. So far so good!

I know the feeling, i do roast beef, then use the leftovers for a cottage pie type thing. Also, salmon stir fry with noodles, omelettes pop up with alarming regularity here. I also do a really nice chicken thigh, black bean and brown rice dish which is mainly flavoured with smoked paprika - kids love that one.

So this weeks meal plan here is:
Tonight - homemade pizza. I'll have courgette, pepper and artichoke while DH will have pepperoni.
Sunday - roast chicken with all the trimmings
Monday - chicken sandwiches and homemade soup (either curried courgette or French onions)
Tuesday - Halloumi and chorizo salad
Wednesday - Homemade chicken curry with dhal
Thursday - sausage and bean stew (river cottage recipe that DH adores)
Friday will be a takeaway as I'll be home late.
For sweet stuff, I'll be doing a cherry bakewell traybake for lunch boxes and a crumble for pudding one evening.

I'm a big fan of using Pinterest for my meal planning. Loads of fab recipes on there. It's also helped reduce my food waste as I can find recipes for leftover items (the curried courgette soup was one such find).

I'm in the same position. We eat similar stuff to you, but also have beef stew, cottage pie and fajitas quite often. I recently dug out my slow cooker and I made the beef stew in that last time. I'm going to attempt bolognaise in it this weekend.

I love mushroom stroganoff! Unfortunately neither of my DC will eat mushrooms.

I'd forgotten about veggie options. I make the golden veggie shepherds pie from here:

It's really nice.

Earlier this year I made a list of everything we eat. It took me some days of thinking (& help from DH).

I then made new lists headed Chicken, Pork, Fish, Veggie, Pasta etc.

When I get in a rut I get the lists out & there is nearly always something that I think we haven't had for ages.

Thanks all.
A few things here we like but haven't made for ages.
The kids both eat well but I always try to make something we all eat rather than doing different dinners - will try more chicken dishes I feel we've been a bit mincy for a while Grin.

Tray bakes - we like sausages, potatoes, onions, carrots, cherry toms - sometimes do peppers or sweet potatoes in addition or as replacements. Bit of oil, slug of balsamic and some salt and pepper.

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1940689/beef-and-vegetable-casserole-

The above works just as well with chicken

Chicken wrapped in prosciutto and done in the george foreman/grill, goes well with loads of different sides, we had this the other night with leeks and chips (using stuff up from the freezer!)

Fry chopped up bacon in a pan, add shredded leeks and cabbage and soften. Stir in some soft cheese and possibly some pasta water. Stir through cooked spaghetti.

Also risotto and shakshuka as mentioned above - both of these are particularly good for store cupboard/long fridge life ingredients.

Sometimes we have breakfast wraps/burritos - either bacon or chorizo, scrambled egg, avocado, corn, onions, cheese, roasted peppers - some combination of these in wraps.

I make most of the above but also a fair few SE asian dishes that are either quick to make on a weekday with a paste/ sauce prepped at the weekend or can be made in advance. And a few vaguely amercian diner type things that come together quickly.
Japanes stir fries, quick ramen, curry
Malaysian satay, laksa, rendang
Ribs and coleslaw
Loaded jacket potatoes (spring onions, ham, cheese)
Pulled pork
Haddock chowder
Chilli con carne

It's only dh and myself but I'm in such a rut. I do all the meal planning and cooking during the week as I work much fewer hours.

I really suggest Miguel Barclay one pound meals which was mentioned on here before. All the dishes are super quick and easy with 'normal' ingredients so you don't have to go out and get special things that you won't use again. I just throw the book at dh and tell him to pick 5 for week. Job done.Grin

I’m also bored to tears with most things we eat. Things on my list that haven’t been mentioned yet: tagine (couscous as a carb rather than the ubiquitous pasta/rice/potatoes), fish pie (hypocritical to suggest as I hate making it), paella (the much-maligned Jamie Oliver recipe), corned beef hash.

We were like a while ago. I spent a weekend traipsing through the internet and all of cookery books to compile a huge list of ideas of meals ideas/meals to try/meals we like etc. (It's about 20 pages long!!)

I also make a list for warmer/colder seasons of meals to make soon which means I always have a go-to list of ideas.

Some things we are having in the next few weeks:

Chicken dinner with all the trimmings (tomorrow, can't wait)
Sausages, roasted carnival squash, veg
Sausage in onion gravy, mash and veg
Cottage pie with runner beans and broccoli
Fish pie with carrots and peas
Fish cakes with sweet potato chips and peas
Baked breaded fish, chips and peas
Chilli and rice
Beef and tomato casserole, root veg mash, runner beans
Pork and apple hotpot
Haddock and sweetcorn chowder
Soup (roast chicken, chicken noodle, Thai pumpkin, butternut squash with chilli and creme fraiche, minestrone, lentil, ham & pea, leek & potato)
Moussaka
Beef dinner with Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings
Toad in the hole
Curries
Sausage casserole, mash and veg

There's probably a lot more. I'll have a look tomorrow.

We like 'breakfast for tea' as a change sometimes:
veggie sausages
Staffordshire oatcakes
eggs
mushrooms
tinned tomatoes for dp and an eggcup of the juice for me!

It can get really frustrating having to accommodate children's fads etc, but I used to find it easier to think along the lines of the main carb and then work from there - eg:
baked potatoes plus ratatouille, cauli cheese, sausage and onion/pepper bake, some sort of bean dish, or just with cheese and coleslaw and salad

rice with chilli, curry, stir fry

pasta - as a bake, with pesto, with a tomato sauce, as lasagne

cous cous - with roasted vege and haloumi, with tagine

etc.

Also, aim for soup once a week (so many variations) and either an eggy meal or a 'posh sarnie' type meal (eg sausage baguettes or hotdogs with corn on the cob).

we eat pretty similar meals but also have fajitas, corned beef hash, oven baked chicken and mushroom risotto, something on toast (scrambled egg, beans, mushrooms, etc), sausage or chicken tray bake, pulled pork with wedges, chicken caeser salad, various versions of fried rice and chinese curry sauce and pasta bakes in various forms. I try to make a brand new meal from book/net at least once a month and sometimes they end up in the mix for a while...that’s where the obsession with chicken and mushroom risotto has come from!

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.com/food/recipes/one_pot_chorizo_and_15611/amp this is a great speedy mid week meal and minimal washing up! I saw it on eat well for less and was pleasantly surprised at how straight forward but tasty it is...just don’t miss out the fresh basil or it’s a bit samey!

Added this www.nigella.com/recipes/one-pan-sage-and-onion-chicken-and-sausage to the repertoire over the weekend. I overlooked it a bit tbh (chicken breasts and chipolotas, so should have cut the time) but it was very tasty. Did pommes dauph and green beans alongside.

I was really bored too, so I started exploring middle eastern style cookery a couple of years ago. My boss at the time was Iranian and he kept producing these incredibly gorgeous smelling lunches. I started with the Ottolenghi Plenty More cookbook, and I now have quite a big collection of books, as we're all addicted to it and I'm always trying new herbs, spices and flavour combinations. It's absolutely transformed our diet. It's not like I'm cooking from them all the time, most of our meals are fairly ordinary (lasagne, chilli, curry etc) but every so often I throw something unexpected in the mix and we love it. Getting some of the ingredients is hard at times, but I plan ahead and thank my lucky stars for internet ordering.

Is there a regional cuisine that you've not really explored that takes your fancy?

We're still enjoying the middle east, but I'm now looking at South America with greedy eyes now that winter is coming. Those spices are calling me.
