First year in a new house. The garden is very old. Part of it used to be an orchard and there are lots and lots of damsons and plums here.

I'd love to hear any tried and tested damson and plum recipes!

Made amazing plum gin last year with Aldi gin and it was so easy to make. Also made a whole load of plum puree (basically boil them with sugar an water until the stones float to the top) and froze it. I did an ice cream with it running through, and it goes well with meringue and cream. Plum jam is also an easy one.

oooh am jealous!
if you have too much, you could do what a friend once did and invite people to come and pick them, then we all gave a donation to her favourite charity

You can also make nice plum sauce for Chinese recipes, and obviously plum crumble

Ooh, Lucky you sound, ahem, luckyGrin

Apart from preserves etc, Clafoutis is lovely with gluts of soft fruit.

V forgiving if you’re often distracted in the kitchen like me.
You plop some pancake/scone batter on the fruit and bake till the cakey bits are done.

(If you leave it in too long, it’s fine to scrape the burned bits off the top & do a slather of custard/cream etc)

Plum crumble with ground almonds included in the crumble mixture works well.
Also, sponge as for Eve Pudding but use plums instead of apples.

Plum tart of course, and plum fool made with custard and cream.

Gently poached with other fruits, apple, pear, brambles, for a winter fruit salad.

Nigel Slater has a chocolate damson cake but it will only use a few hundred grams.

We have a damson tree and so far have made jam (1.3kg of fruit for six small - 190g, I think - jars) and have a large Kilner jar of damson gin maturing or doing whatever it is that it does under the stairs (800g). The latter is obviously not a cheap option as you have to buy the gin first....

You can always just wash and freeze damsons whole, and then defrost them and cook at a later stage, I suppose?

Damson Streusel Cake

100g Quark
4 tbsp Oil
4 tbsp Milk
75g sugar
200g plain flour
2 tsp baking powder

Mix & knead into a dough and roll out to fit a lined baking tin - think mine was a round 10" one. Make a edge all the way round.

cut damsons into wedges then put them on top of the dough - they need to be quite near to each other. Then sprinkle over some sugar and cinnamon.

75g sugar
75g soft butter
75g plain flour
Few drops vanilla extract.
Mix that into crumbs (I did it with an electric mixer but i'm sure you can do it by hand) then sprinkle over the damsons.

Oven 170 degrees for 40 - 45 mins!!

Delicious!

Where I live they’re so cheap right now - i got a kilo of them for 1€ last week so I doubled that recipe and made a huge cake. It freezes well.
It’s a huge hit in our house

I got two huge trays of windfalls from the PYO and I'm trying plum fruit leather - haven't finished making it though!

My uncle used to make amazing Damson Gin.
I don't have the recipe I'm afraid but I remember it being amazing - although I now question them allowing a 12 year old to taste it 😂
