I've just caramelised a banana..

And it was the most delicious but ridiculously easy thing I've done all year!

I've resolved to serve it as part of dessert for every dinner guest in the foreseeable future as it was so impressive with zero effort.

See also: oven baked wraps to 'make your own' tortilla crisps for dips etc

Anything else you've discovered that is impressive in taste / look / sounds good but that is the work of a moment???

Tomatoes, cut in quarters, drizzle with honey and sprinkle with salt, shove in oven.

Try banana or plum flapjack.

Make flapjack mix, half on the bottom of an ovenproof dish layer of bananas or tinned plums, other half of the flapjack and bake.

Yum

Peel pears, core and cut into quarters. Place in a single tightly packed layer in oven proof dish, pour over double cream to coat and puddle half way up. Bake at 180 til caramelised. Gorgeous. You get slightly toasty caramelised bits and the pear juices make a sort of very decadent custard with the cream.

Sounds delicious!! Did you try it with ice cream?

Cut broccoli into wedges. Toss in oil and salt and roast on a high heat. So delicious. No boiling required. Tastes so different.

Poached pears. Make a mulled wine with extra sugar (white or red) and chuck some peeled pears in for an hour or so. Serve with 'posh' ice cream. Tastiest, easiest desert ever.

parmesan crisps...are just little piles of cheese on a non stick tray in a oven until they are golden

and my top tip is to use pastry cutter to keep the cheese tidy....put the cutter on the tray, drop in the grated cheese, carefully lift pastry cutter and move to next place. Repeat!

also do not let those fuckers go cold on the tray, you will never get them off!!

@nervousnails - you can add a sprinkle of sugar after pouring on the cream to help the caramelisation. I’ve done with and without and as long as your pears are sweet either is fine but it may be personal taste. I don’t like sweetened/flavoured youghurt for eg and find tinned custard too sweet.

That sounds amazing @Katescurios I have a tin of cherry pie filling in the cupboard, would that work?

Have you got a flapjack recipe?

Report
AnneLovesGilbert · 08/08/2018 19:55

My recent faves are homemade tzatziki and caramel sauce.

@1frenchfoodie Thank you! I don't usually like sugar and this will be perfect. I am making it this weekend. Any specific kind of pears or regular eating ones?

@nervousnails I usually use conference but others would be fine - it takes 25 mins or so to caramelise so you don’t want them to be too ripe.

@annelovesgilbert

I do the same recipe my always did, in part because I love it, but also because it's easy to remember as 2,4,6,8 flapjack

2 tablespoons golden syrup.
4oz generate sugar
6oz butter
8oz oats

Golden syrup, butter and sugar in a bowl, melt in the microwave in short bursts of over a double boiler.

Stir in oats

Press into a tin that has been greased and lined (or cheat and use a disposable foil tin)

Press firmly into tin and bake at 180 degrees for 20-25 mins.

Cherries would work just drain the juice off. The plums go sticky and jammy so I imagine cherries would do the same.

On the easy but delicious front, I make ds basic quesadillas for lunch when he is being fussy. I stick a mini wrap in a hot frying pan, top with some grated cheese and some chopped tomatoes - tinned are fine but dont use too much liquid- and more cheese then another wrap.
Flip and cook on the other side for a few minutes then plate up, let it cool a bit then slice into quarters

Excellent lunch and takes 5 minutes

How did i forget drop scones, haven't made them in ages but they are delicious.

Just stir ingredients together and then drop a spoonful into a hot frying pan.

A mix between scones and pancakes, and eaten hot with a smear of butter.or go crazy and serve with ice cream and raspberry sauce.
