I was surprised how many of these were things that were totally normal to me as a kid in the 80s, and so the idea of many of them doesn't personally disgust me. (When did chickens stop being supplied with giblets, anyway?) But even then my mum thought tripe was disgusting and unhealthy - and would buy tongue on the same occasion. Which seems odd now.
Medlars are to me something from Shakespeare and occasionally heard of in articles about fancy restaurants and thus a different type of thing totally.

Shouldn't this title be "Offal has gone out of fashion"? I remember noticing the lack of giblets in chickens. It seemed to happen in the 90s if I remember correctly...and thank God! Disgusting!

Medlars...we have them in South Australia as they grow well. People always seem to be giving them away along with Quince. I think as South Australia was settled by English in the late 1800s, that a lot were planted then...we always have Quince jelly etc available.

Sardines are also popular here...fresh ones though.

My mom still buys tongue, liver and faggots. She does live alone now, so she can eat whatever the Jeff she likes, but you won't catch me eating it. Though I did grow up in Brains faggots, I just couldn't now.

Oooh and soft roe, she partial to that too.

Tapioca (which I liked) semolina (no thanks) blancmange (okay but overrated IMO) aren't offal!

@fieryginger, yes, that's another one, cod roe, I'm surprised that wasn't mentioned.

Interesting to hear about the medlars in Australia. And quince is another one you don't hear about much other than in restaurants, and that Spanish jelly to go with Manchego.

What's the deal with faggots? We ate them as kids and loved them and I only don't buy them now because I just never think of it. They're only big meatballs aren't they? Or is there some hidden ingredient that I don't know about and am better off not knowing!
