Yesterday, I went shopping and for the first time in a while i hadn't written a list or a weekly plan. I had ideas in mind for the stuff as it went in the trolley, but when I got home struggled with out a list for what we were gonna eat that night.

At the dinner table I asked the family what they would do if the had a whole chicken in the fridge and they needed to cook a meal. They couldn't say curry it because we had already done that this week.

DD 19 said she would break it down dice it up in a spicy tomato sauce with pasta

DS 16 said he would roast it with veg

DS 7 said he would break it up and put it on a bun

DH said he would break it up and Chinese it stir fried with veg served with rice

We then moved on to minced beef, pork fillet etc

So what would you do with that whole chicken in the fridge???

I did this last night with a whole chicken.
Didn't do the mash, just got a french stick and a bowl of green salad. it's very tasty.

Roast it and make pita breads with salad and hummus

Tell DH it's there and wait for him to make something with it. I don't have a good track record with dismembering chickens. I would like him to do a barbecue this evening though, so something involving marinade, flatbreads and salad would be good if he doesn't mind.

I would say roast but it's too hot for that nonsense at the mo

I'd break it up and do either

chicken, chorizo and cannellini beans served over spinach (adapted Nigella recipe)

or

homemade fakey KFC

Roast it. Although chickens are small these days. That will be demolished to about 70% in my house. Then I scavenge the meat off for either salad/sandwiches the next day or chicken stir fry. Then slow cooker there bones for stock

Some fab ideas here!!! My DH worked in a butcher shop when he was younger so now he's shown me I can confidently break down a chicken, I hate doing it though, my DD19 can do it almost confidently.
I think the meat is so much nicer when you do it this way.

I'd spatchcock it, marinade it in something spicy and whack it in the oven. Serve with salad, maybe new potatoes and nice bread.

I'd put it in the sc with lemon juice and a bunch of thyme in its neck. Serve with salad and nice bread if it is hot.

Take any left over meat off the carcass and make some sort of pie/spring roll type thing using filo pastry possibly adding mushrooms and cream cheese or even vol-au-vents

Than put the carcass back in the slow cooker with an onion, pepper corns herbs to make stock either to freeze or to make a risotto.

Hmm, full roast here tonight - see attached weather forecast.

Will cook 2 chickens, as large is a measly 1kg. Scraps of roast, plus some of second bird for risotto, chicken and noodles with the rest.

What would you do with ...... ?

I'd poach it with onions and then shred it for a filo pie (I know this because it's currently in the pot poaching Grin)

I would pot roast it whole - firstly brown it whole in a frying pan with a little oil, then put in a large lidded pot with white wine, stock, chopped celery, carrots, whole shallots, parsley and a couple of bay leaves - cook undisturbed in oven for up to two hours, depending on the size of the chicken. Delicious.Smile

I'm a snob Grin i can't find free range in thst price range so they're all tiny and expensive.

I made stock form leftover bones and cooked it with rice yesterday(instead of 2 cups water). Delicious
