costco cake to order question

I'm arranging a cake for a class end of term party, and the costco cakes are good value and a good size to feed the number of people we have going. I am not really wanting any decoration on the cake, instead I am planing to make a card flag with each of the kids names on it which will be glued to a skewer and then inserted into the cake.

Does anyone know what the icing is like - is it royal icing or soft? It doesn't say on the site and the phone is ringing out when I try to contact them. My concern is that if it is soft icing, the skewers may wobble about (although I plan on putting them in last minute) whereas if it was royal icing, they might be a bit more secure as it's a bit stiffer. If I keep the cake in the fridge beforehand, might that help? Hope this all makes sense!

any help appreciated!

I think the ones I've had were soft. TBH though they are so ridiculously delicious that its worth taking the risk! Grin

Soft, it’s not like the icing on supermarket cakes. They are delicious though.

Yeah like others said soft but I reckon you would be able to stick the flags in ok n I think it's a lovely idea!

If you are worried about wobbly flags, put them on bbq bamboo skewers and make them deeper into the cake.

Thanks all, I thought it might be soft but the price is so good, worth doing I think!!

Cut a straw and put that in the cake and put the bamboo skewer into the straw. It will hold.

They're pretty thick so should be ok anyway. I bloody love a costco cake

just in case anyone, anywhere has the same dilemma (unlikely but you never know) - the bamboo kebab skewer things were perfect in the Costco cake. I put them just ahead of the party starting and they stayed in place for a good 4 hours until I took them out again.
