Can anybody describe what beetroot tastes like?

I really want to have more rainbow type vegetables, but I haven't actually tried beetroot! I vaguely smelt it and I wasn't all like "wow that smells nice" type of reaction but I really want to try and like it lol. I'm thinking of buying pickled beetroot! Can anyone tell me if you'd recommend having it?

I've only ever had pickled beetroot but I'm fond of it anyhow and it'd very good for you I hear. It sort of tastes earthy but with a tang to it though that may be the vinegar

Dirt. It tastes like dirt.
Or how I imagine dirt to taste, anyway! Grin

A low risk purchase, i'd say.

It’s earthy. I really like it, especially with feta or goat’s cheese. It’s a good addition to a cous cous salad.

Earthy, sweet, woody...absolutely gorgeous in a salad with goats cheese.

The pickled beetroot tastes different to plain cooked beetroot which would be better for you. But if in vinegar try the sweet vinegar one. You can buy cooked beetroot vacuum packed in the salad section of supermarkets and the taste of that I would ( personally) describe as being pleasant in an earthy way.

Fresh beetroot is lovely, and one of the most under rated vegetables in my opinion, very hard taste to describe though.

(Pickled is also nice but obv tastes more of the pickling.)

Would anyone describe celeriac or celery as "earthy"? Only cos I absolutely hate celery and celeriac!

I really like beetroot. In terms of texture, they are similar to carrots. They are sweet in the same way that carrots are sweet, but they have an earthier flavour. If you get a picked one, they taste mostly of vinegar. Unpickled ones go well with quite strong tasting foods likes mackerel or goats' cheese. Beetroot crisps are delicious!

I hate celeriac but love beetroot. I’d also recommend buying roasted not pickled.

I love beetroot.

It’s nice with horseradish and goes well with oily fish like salmon.
And cheese.

I tend to buy pickled for day to day, I like sliced pickled in a cheese sandwich, you can get some nice sweet chilli/other flavoured ones in the salad section at the supermarket which are nice in salads, and then plain cooked and vacuum packed in the root veg section for recipes.

I like it raw best. Sweet and earthy, crunchy

Nicer than celery and MUCH nicer than celeriac.

Mud? Earthy? Grin

I would never describe beetroot like that.

It’s texture is similar to a carrot but not as hard

And maybe it tastes a bit like carrot too

I would absolutely describe beetroot as earthy, aka dirt. Yuck.

It's lovely roasted, really brings out the sweetness. If you can find some fresh ones, wrap them in foil and bake in the oven (at 180) for about 30-40 minutes until a knife will go through them easily. The skins will peel off with no trouble and voila... As everyone's said, fab in a salad with goat's cheese.

Yes to roasted - really delicious
