I just bought a short dated chicken today. Can anyone inspire me with more interesting ideas other than roasting it?

Cut it into portions and do a casserole. Depending on how many you need to feed, you could possibly freeze some for later.
Roast it ahead of time, then strip it and make a pie with the meat and stock with the bones.
Roast it as normal, but serve with something other than your usual roast spuds etc. We love roast chicken with a rice dish and salad, or with a veg and pasta bake as a side.
Portion it and bake after a bath in a marinade of your choosing.

This is one of our favourites - sticky chicken.
Mix honey, tomato ketchup, soy sauce and 5 spice powder (all to taste) to make a thick sticky sauce. Soak chicken pieces in it for at least 30 minutes but longer is fine (in fridge) then shove in a pan that you've lined with baking paper. Bake in oven for about 30 minutes, till chicken is properly cooked through. I normally do this with bone out thighs, but I can't see any reason not to use bone-in meat.
