I can't re-heat this, can I?

I made a chorizo and chickpea casserole tonight and in an effort to use up some food I had in the fridge, I threw in some chicken scraps from a chicken that I roasted on Wednesday.

It seemed genius in the moment but now DH has reminded me that I can't re-heat the casserole tomorrow now because the chicken has been heated twice.

He's right, isn't he? I am so annoyed at myself because I made loads of casserole to last us two days.

I suppose it's against official advice, but I definitely would and have done this!

I would reheat.

I definitely would not. It is horrible to have a stomach illness.

I would eat it, tbh I don't even know which bit of what you've done is wrong

I would. As long as it was properly stored and hadn't been left at room temperature for longer than an hour. (Official advice is 2 hours)

It's against official advice but as long as it's piping hot, and all the other protocols had been followed, I would heat once more.

I would eat it.

I would, without a second thought, the only exception would be if it was a pre roasted shop chicken....which you say it isn't.

Thanks Mumsnetters, I think I will risk a bowl for myself tomorrow. DH won't touch it.

Yep I'd reheat and eat too. Aren't we encouraged to make soup with leftover chicken? I do this all the time and that's reheated.. .

I made that a few weeks ago too and it got a couple of reheats because I made enough for the entire town I made rather a lot.
I'm very antiwaste so reheat stuff all the time.

I re- re-heat stuff all the time. As long as you really nuke it to kill any bacteria, it's fine.

I wouldn't do it. Chicken you only reheat once.

But if you can't/shouldn't reheat chicken, how did anyone ever make anything like chicken soup or chicken pie or curry with leftovers from a roast? I'm really confused as I make things like this with leftover roast meat all the time...does the same go for turkey? As we gave boxing day curry with reheated turkey every year!Confused

I would and have with no ill effects. I regularly make dishes with leftover roast chicken and then reheat them again for lunch the next day.

I have only ever had food poisoning from a ready meal.

I would reheat and eat it but I wouldn't freeze it (I know you didn't ask that OP) but those are my rules

Bluesheep8 it’s ok to reheat once but you can’t then do it again.

Ah ok, thanks for clarifying that, I was beginning to think I've somehow narrowly escaped poisoning people! So what you're saying is, if I make curry out of leftover roast chicken, I shouldn't (in theory) reheat the curry the day after that? (I think it's likely that I've done this before now though).....

I reheat and reheat... You’ll be fine

In theory Blue but I’ve definitely done it and not died

I'd eat it.

If it's only okay to reheat once- how do you work out stock? Cooked chicken carcass, bones and shredded meat- heated to make stock- then cooled and used as soup/ risotto/ pie base etc. I often make the stock , portion into three and freeze two- so by the time it's eaten it will have been cooked, cooled, cooked, cooled, frozen and then cooked again. That's the best way to use up a whole chicken no? Fifteen years I've doing that and I'm not dead yet

No. Any other meat, probably, but not chicken.

Bluesheep8 · 02/04/2018 07:20

Yep, I've reheated chicken more than twice far too many times to remember over the years. So did my mum. I honestly didn't know you weren't supposed to!

It's against advice but I'd eat it if you boiled the crap out of it when reheating.

I would reheat chicken, as mentioned leftovers often used in pies and other recipes, but I wouldn't eat chicken after day 3. However dh would eat it on day 4.
