I got a telling off today from 17 year old DS for putting a Nature Valley protein bar in his lunch box.

(yes he could make his own, but it’s a good deal for me as he does other house jobs while I do packed lunches- he does pull his ownweight)

He’s at school for a long day and doing Alevels so stress is a bit high. He’s taken up running too. He’s tall and thin and is more concerned with his teeth than weight.

He’s vegetarian.
Sandwiches and wraps I’m ok with. It’s other stuff. He eats loads.
Sausage rolls? Hot cross buns? He eats all fruit. I tried to explain that there is sugar in loads of things and at least the muesli type bars have a few added nutrients.

Any ideas most welcome

You could make him a pot of plain yogurt with honey and oats with a sprinkle of nuts and berries.

Avocado is filling too.

Nuts is a good idea. I don’t think he will sit to eat a yoghurt. It’s more grab and go.
He likes avocado but suspect it would brown or not survive the day on his lunch box. Maybe I could add it to a sandwich though.

Boiled eggs, couscous salad, definitely nuts/seeds, celery sticks with peanut butter, if you sprinkle lime juice on your avocado it keeps it green.
BBC good food has a great "feel good flap jack" recipe made with mashed bananas, honey, oats and dried fruit.
Cheese cubes with apple slices and grapes are a good filler, or apple slices spread with peanut butter and sandwiched together.
Trail mix made with dried fruit, shaved coconut, nuts and seeds. Smoked tofu fingers, cooked the night before and eaten cold.
Bean dip with toasted pitta strips.

If it's grab and go stuff, falafel, olives, chickpeas baked with chilli and salt are delicious

Nut clusters: melt dark chocolate and peanut butter and add to chopped nuts and seeds. Pour into a shallow, lined tray and refrigerate to set. Then cut into squares. Great to grab and go.

Can he go shopping with you to choose the kind of things he would like (within budget / reason)?

Nuts! Peanuts, almonds, walnuts, cashews, as he likes.
Lidl sells individual portions of mixed seeds... it's wasteful packaging, but no trouble for a hungry lad to polish off.
Tomatoes, carrots, celery, dried fruit.

Favourite quinoa salad is fabulous, keeps for a few days in the fridge.
