Friends coming to stay next week. I mainly need help with easy dinners and desserts, though any easy but impressive lunch and breakfast ideas also welcome.

So far for dinner - spag bol, jacket potatoes, curry, pulled pork wraps,

Desserts - yogurt (dull), banana and custard, shop bought pie, Eton mess.

What else?? Going good shopping tomorrow!

How exhausting!
I'd be inclined to do "help yourself" type lunches. Make a huge batch of hummus and/or chicken liver pate, buy large lumps of cheese, salad and bread plus fruit and bought/made cake, then you can just put out broadly the same buffet every day. Add sausages on sticks one day

One night you could roast several chickens and serve with rice, salad and perhaps shop-bought harissa

Pancakes one night for pudding? Make lots of batter, then let everyone cook their own (although I still have a pancake mark on the ceiling from doing this). Also fill the freezer with ice cream

Sounds like fun anyway

Jacket potatoes, choice of fillings for people to help themselves.

Bangers, mash and peas/sweetcorn.

Great vat of bean chilli, toppings out for people to help themselves.

Take-away one night - pizza?

I wouldn't be doing pudding every night if I had guests for a week. If if did feel driven to it, ice cream would be coming out more than once. Fruit salad?

Lunches - selection of salad, bread, cheese, cold meat and a couple of shop bought quiches warmed through. Can be done more than once in the week.

Hot dog butties might well make an appearance as well in our house. With fried onion if we're pushing the boat out. Linda McCartney sausages for veggies.

Roast dinner, sausage and mash, chicken casserole, tray bake, fish pie, meat pie, salmon and new potatoes with salad, eat out one day?
Cupcakes, sponge and custard, crumble, lemon meringue pie, trifle I'd have a healthy pud option of yogurt and fruit every day in case any of your friends is watching their weight.

Thanks all!

I’m sure everyone will pitch in and help and they know it’ll be chaos so aren’t expecting gourmet standard!!

We’ll deffo be eating out a couple of nights and yes pizzas to check in the oven for backup is a good plan.

We’ve got busy days planned so if we get home late afternoon I want to be able whip something up fairly quickly really.

Good point re weight loss Wink

A big pot of chilli or curry (maybe a veggie version too) with rice plus extras like poppadoms
Soup and selection of crusty bread/cheese/cold meat
Porridge with chopped fruit/maple syrup/chocolate spread
A self-assembly Greek salad with falafels and pittas warmed in the oven and big individual dishes of the other ingredients (olives, hummus, tzatziki, tomato, lettuce, cucumber, onion) so that everyone can make it to their taste and a bowl of savoury rice
Good luck - it sounds like fun

I’d cook a big gammon joint one night, then servesliced cold for lunch the following day.
Big puff pastry tart with roasted veg and mozzarella, serve with homemade coleslaw, salads and wedges.
Chicken and chorizo tray bake
Chilli with rice, tortilla chips, salsa, guacamole and sour cream
If they eat fish I’d do a fish dish one day, a fish pie or salmon/cod fillets

Hm... Obviously also depends on your budget, the people you're inviting, whether this is some sort of festive occasion and on the things you like to cook.

  • Fondue
  • Pizza with various toppings
  • Cold platter (cheese, meat, fish, various breads, salad etc
  • chili
  • huge lasagne
  • baked pasta dish
  • potatoe salad (good for lunch ime)
  • rice with vegetables and tofu
  • Cottage pie
  • Risotto
  • Couscous
  • Soup (maybe a tomato soup with toasted bread, goat cheese and salad?)
  • pasta with your favourite sauce and vegetables
  • jacket potatoe
  • stew? (lentil, fish, meat? Basically whatever you like)
  • sandwiches or wraps
  • meat loaf
  • fish with potatoes and vegetables
  • roast chicken

    breakfast:

Porrdige, toast, eggs, fruit, smoked fish, soup etc

Ice cream, custard, fruit salad, cake, pie.

I cook for ten at work at the weekends. I usually do a big salad with either

a pasta bake, or
3 full oven tray home made pizzas or
schnitzel and home made chips or
a mushroom risotto made in two pans at the same time

all easy

For lunches and breakfast, I'd do help yourself to sandwich / soup, so would get plenty of bread & fillings in. I might buy some of the frozen croissants / pan au chocolat from M&S.

I'd aim for big tray bake or casserole type pot meals.

So a big pot of pork and bean casserole or sausage casserole. this Mary Berry sausage tray bake would scale up easily and is v tasty and a complete meal.

I'd also consider Nigella's chicken, leek and pea tray bake from her most recent book, again doubled up and made by jointing two inexpensive chickens. Can post the recipe if you don't have it.

Lastly I would make some easy home made cakes, a big double batch of rock cakes or something like that.

Desserts: definitely crumble. Maybe a cheesecake, they go a long way. Make up some jelly?
