What's the big deal with Prosecco?

Perhaps I haven't yet drunk a decent prosecco but it seems pretty wishy washy to me..

Is Cava no longer a thing? Much crisper and fuller imo.

We have a new wine bar which sells prosecco by the bottle and glass but not champagne.

I'd pay a couple of quid more for a glass of champagne anyway. Alternatively a decent Cremant can be great ( but woefully hard to find in the UK)

Honestly? I think it is just good marketing.

Don't get me wrong, I'm partial to a sparkling wine but much prefer a Cremant or Sekt.

It’s fizzy white wine that’s all, though I don’t like white wine so I may be biased

It just seems so popular.

It sounds churlish to refuse a glass at someone's house when visiting but as I'm calorie counting every drink matters.

Perhaps I'll have to invent an allergy...

I agree! Just had a glass of it as we had some bottles left over from a weekend party and someone had left a bottle of it here. Yuck. Cava, cremant, champagne all lovely. Prosecco, bleurgh. DH is glad cos he can have the rest of the bottle now. Happy days says he Smile

Had it once, didn't like the taste and gave me a terrible hangover and dodgy tum. I much prefer a Sauvignon Blanc.

Phew. Thank God it isn't just me being fussy.

DH is the same though.

Need too get back to France and load up the car with some Cremant de Bourgogne. I could drink that day and night.

OP I'm totally with you on this one and agree that cremant is a much better tipple (if you can't have champers, that is).

This reminds me of the news story last year that reported that the Brits' sudden love affair with cheap prosecco raises the risk of widespread dental damage!

Prosecco is poor man's champagne

I prefer Prosecco to Champagne and Cremant. I find the 2 Cs biscuity and gassy - not all, but in the main. I will drink both but prefer the smoother taste of a Prosecco. (But not all Prosecco are equal, some are a lot better than others.)

Sainsburys taste the difference prosecco is lovely, I don't like many others!

I can't understand it either. Terrible stuff.

I much prefer prosecco to champagne. In general seems much lighter. I'm converted.

It's not as nice as Champagne that's for sure! But it is a very drinkable version - if you buy a nice one.

I find champagne too acid, gives me terrible heartburn.

A nice prosecco is quite light, I like cava too...each to their own. I did particularly love it in Venice by the carafe...

The big deal is that lots of people really like drinking it. That's it, there's no mystery to it.

I'm not keen on sparkling wines generally, but I've drunk prosecco a few times and get that it's refreshing, quaffable and feels celebratory because of the fizz.

Sparkling wine is the only alcohol I drink going on 15 years and I'm a prosecco convert (from Cava), and a big to moderate social drinker. I'd have a good prosecco over champagne, I just find it really refreshing and pleasant, and as a bit of a foodie I just think it goes with most things, or on its own. It used to be hard to find more than one brand of prosecco in shops though so def. a bit of a marketing thing in the wine industry I think. There are LOTS of crap ones. BELLA CUCCINA (Tesco) is the best value imo.
(But what's with all the recent naff interior design paraphernalia on prosecco & gin in Matalan etc? Hate that crap.)

P.S: Agree with PP Sainsburys is good, also Co-Op's. M&S is horrible.

I feel the same way OP. There's a particular prosecco taste that I just don't like. I have had prosecco that doesn't have that taste but not often. Much prefer cava.

Agree OP. If I never have another glass of Prosecco, it will be too soon.

People like it. You don't have to. No need to be rude and snobby about it and those that do like it though.

Namethecat · 05/05/2018 23:14

Never tried it. Don't like champagne either.

I'd rather have good prosecco than bad champagne (or cremant, or cava)

I'd rather have good champagne, but it costs so much more. I can afford to drink good prosecco every day - I'd go bankrupt drinking that much good champagne
