Idiot-proof fish meals?

Hi everyone. I'm allergic to most fish so don't eat it - have had 2 weeks of hives from one mouthful before! However, I'd like to feed the kids more fish, especially oily fish. Youngest is 7. At present their fish intake is limited to the odd fish and chip supper, smoked salmon sarnies, occasional fish fingers and occasional tuna/mayo/sweetcorn mix. Occasional pilchards on toast. This makes it look more varied than it is, because really the chip shop supper is the one that happens once a week and the rest rarely happen!

Any idiot-proof suggestions which are very easy, even if the cook can't taste to check she's got the seasoning right?
Very smelly fish makes me feel sick, but I can put up with a bit of stink!
Thank you! Smile

Pouting is very cheap, and a white fish. Fried in egg and breadcrumbs goes down well in our house, or Whiting which is more expensive. Also, Cod wrapped in bacon and cooked in the oven for about 20 minutes wrapped in foil.

Salmon fillets with lemon and cream sauce (can buy packet if don’t fancy making yourself but sauce can also be used for example with chicken) served with green veg and boiled new potatoes. It’s my go to quick and easy fish dish that everyone eats.

Tin of mackerel in tomato sauce, flaked with a fork to make it into small pieces then stirred into hot pasta goes down well with my kids. You’d an add peas, too, if you like.

Very easy and quick (just don’t get the spicy tomato sauce by mistake!).

That's what I do... Tinned mackerel, pasta, home-made pasta sauce if you're inclined, peas. My 3 yr old loves it.

This one. For some reason they don’t like the bigger tins...

Salmon cooked in foil - with asparagus and cherry toms and a little butter or with soy sauce, ginger and orange juice. 20 mins at 200 c.
Fish sandwiches- dip fish fillets in flour, fry until cooked and serve on a roll with tartare sauce, lettuce and a slice of tomato.
Fish tacos - google for recipes. If you bake the fish rather than grill it it doesn’t disintegrate! Serve with warm tortillas, salsa, coleslaw etc.

Mix together 3-4 tbsp soy sauce, a squirt (1tsp-ish) honey, 1 tsp 5 spice powder and about 50ml water.
Put some salmon fillets in a glass/ceramic ovenproof dish that’s only a tiny bit bigger than the fish. Pour over the sauce and cook for 20 mins at 180c.
Serve with rice & stir fry veg.
It’s lovely. The reason I stipulate glass or ceramic is that it’s a bugger to clean afterwards. In fact I’ve started making it in those disposable foil oven dishes. That works well. No washing up!

Tuna pasta bake
Tuna, sweet potato and chilli fishcakes (make a load and freeze)
I like cod with Cajun spices threaded on a skewer with peppers
Any white fish marinated in a mix of yoghurt and any curry paste. Place on baking tray and spread a little mango chutney on top of each fillet before baking.
Smoked salmon stirred through pasta with cream cheese, peas and sweet corn.

A sure-fire winner with our kids is salmon teriyaki.

Mix together 2 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp brown sugar, 3 tbsp olive oil, 1 lemon juiced, 1 garlic clove grated. Add salmon fillets. Bake for 20 mins on 180C. Goes well with rice or mash.

Oh wow, some great ideas here! Thank you very much. I had no idea you could put mackerel with pasta Btw - and mackerel is a good oily fish. The baked salmon recipes sound impressive. And I would never have thought of caking or teriyaki sauces on fish. Excellent. Nearest teenager to hand is impressed at the suggestions. Big thanks to everyone Grin

Or use teriyaki sauce from bottle (Waitrose is best) and fry in frying pan with salmon. Chuck in sachet of precooked rice, handful of peas and ta dah!

A more expensive but delicious fish dish is seabass. Dry, score and season the skin, fry skin side down for 4 mins until crispy. Flip over for 30 secs, add soy sauce and serve. I add red chilli, garlic and ginger too for proper restaurant style smells. Children adore the crispy fish. Do rice or noodles and greens with it.

Prince's little tins of mackerel in spicy tomato sauce, mashed a bit on toast. Divine.

Most fillets of fish can just be lightly fried, you can see they're cooked through as uncooked bits are translucent.

Wrap a fillet in foil as pp have said and bake for something like 12 mins on gas 5, I'd put some pepper and lemon juice on them in the foil.
