Vegan cook book?

Hi
A family member is interested in becoming vegan and I’d love to give them a good recipe book: Can anyone please recommend a really useful book to start with?
(I would love to incorporate more vegan meals too and make things like spiced chickpeas/ falafels/ dahl but I need quite a lot of fat and high energy foods as struggle to keep weight on as it is. So interested in high energy food replacements too, I guess nuts and avocados and various oils but I panic at the idea of cutting out the calories in cheese/ ice cream / eggs etc!

Thank you so much. I am tempted to get thug kitchen (I’d never heard of it ) but put off by the swearing which is annoying as it sounds really good- it’s harder to give as a present plus our children would pick up on it straight away!

I love Forks Over Knives. It focuses on a whole food diet. Really recommend it.

Divine Vegan Desserts by Lisa Fabry is great for those with a sweet tooth.

Eastern Vegetarian Cooking by Madhur Jaffrey has lots of vegan recipes (and some of the others can be veganised). If I could only have one recipe book, I would choose this one.

Don't bother with the Veganomicon. Although it's considered a classic, I find many of the recipes bland and some are just horrible. (The banana and chocolate bread pudding is remarkably foul.)

My kids were highly amused at the amount of swearing in Thug kitchen - but they are teens so they know how to deal with swearing. An oldie but a goodie - Amanda Grant vegan cookery - despite being over 20 years old it is remarkably modern in style ie avoiding the dreary brown whole food approach.

There is a vegan Christmas recipe book as the Deal of the Day on Kindle today, 99pence.

Just read Thug's kitchen and I'm glad I didn't buy it. It's very American - quite traditional flavours, nothing to get me interested except for the Creamy black bean and cilantro dip - I'll happily leave this book back to the library. (And the swearing gets old very quickly) It''s probably a good first cookbook for a lad.

Deliciously Ella's books are vegan. I bought her books for my uni student niece who is vegan. I would say that a lot of her recipes are very calorific so no need to worry! Quite high fat so lots of oils, nut butters, nuts and seeds, avocado, coconut milk, plus she doesn't skimp on sweetening things with hundreds of medjool dates (I think there are about 20 in one batch of her sweet potato brownies, plus honey or maple syrup).

Oddly I don’t really like the recipes I tried from Deliciously Ella, but maybe should try again. (I thought things tasted ok on first bite then we all realised the brownies or whatever I’d made weren’t the ‘real thing’.) i will try and reinstate her app though and love things with coconut milk.!
I will be excited if find some recipes I can take up regularly though and love all these thoughts.

Another vote for thug kitchen though very sweary. Also most of the Post Punk Kitchen books .

Honestly though, I only ever usually find one or two recipes that I'll actually make repeatedly, and mostly I just look on the internet now.

I recommend Lee Watson, Peace & Parsnips. It's 'real' food, not fake, vegan, 'pretending to be meat and cheese' food.

Thanks Pikatu - ordered that one from the library. We are trying to eat vegan 3 times a week, but I don't like to eat soy products, or fake cheeses and we have nut allergies, so someone who is a deft hand with pulses and with interesting flavours that go beyond the basics of curries and chillies.

Just gone through Deliciously Ella - my overwhelming feeling is the there are too many sweet recipes. Found just 7 recipes that I would fancy making. Off to look at the other books mentioned!

Plant based cookbook - DK. - about £5 in the work or on kindle - really good variety of recipes.

But I could never go vegan

Deliciously or Simply Ella - plant based rather than vegan but only uses honey which is easily swapped for maple syrup or agave.
