delicious foods for brace wearing DD?

ShowMeTheElf · 27/11/2017 14:01

Dd had brace fitted this morning.
Can't have anything chewy or sticky, crusty or crispy: anything which may stick or which needs to be bitten, in short.
eg can't have crisps, can have skips.

Please help me: I need to feed her for the next 2 years and my mind is blank! I'm looking for nutritious not to complex recipes which aren't all based around milk/eggs please

I made soup and bread (with crusts cut off) and egg custard for lunch.
I can do mash, custard, stewed fruit, smooth soups.

She isn't keen on soup, and actively dislikes yogurt or anything spicy. She told me today that she doesn't like cauliflower cheese but she has eaten it without complaint for 13 years. I think that the lack of bacon may be colouring her view.

All ideas welcome. I appreciate all thoughts and experience. thanks

Are you sure about that? The only thing I avoided when I had braces was toffee.

She'll be fine to carry on eating mostly as before once the aching has calmed down.

I don't ever remember having to cut anything out of my diet when I had braces... I even sussed my way around apples eventually. Just avoid chewing gum as it gets tangled in the wire 😂

Googling suggests it’s just for a few days after braces have been put in, or tightened.

Spaghetti bolognese?

She'll go bck to eating her normal foods in a few days, she may need soft foods for a couple of days after having them tightened each time.

Dad has hers fitted 10 days ago. She only couldn’t manage prope food for a couple of days when she ate a lot of scrambled egg and smoked salmon. Completely back to normal now.

You've got this all wrong OP! You don't need a recipe schedule for 2 years at all.

If you have a brace the only things you can't eat are things that might damage the brace - so biting into hard things (very crusty bread, apples, hard popcorn) are out because they will put pressure on the brackets/wire. Also sticky stuff - like chewing gum or very sticky toffees for same reason.

Beyond that you can eat anything.

First few days after a new wire is fitted or the brace is put on, teeth can hurt/ache so chewing is painful. During this period, manage with softer foods like pasta and painkillers. After that a normal diet is fine.

Ice cream can be good because the wire is designed to straighten when its warm (body temperature) so sucking on ice (not chewing!) or ice cream can reduce discomfort during first few days as making the wire colder reduces the tension.

Lots of foods are also fine to eat if you cut them up - so a normal soft sandwich is a pain to bite into because although if it's soft enough you can, it gets stuck all round the brace. so its usually better to cut it up.

Apart from first week or so, you don't need to worry so you are panicking unnecessarily.

Thanks for all the advice and experience. I think we'll be taking the orthodontist advice for a while until we get more used to the whole thing as the braces are extensive to correct quite a lot of crossover top and bottom and the teeth are under a lot of pressure. It was the orthodontist who used the crisps vs skips example.

Thanks for the ideas Ada. I hadn't even considered risotto!
I'd be really grateful for any more food ideas and recipes.

Tomato and mixed bean casserole with chopped up sausages cooked in would be soft, especially if you used the Matteson ring sausage or frankfurters.
Fish is another idea, perhaps fish pie, or fillet with herb and butter sauce.

You’ll soon get into the swing of it I’m sure.

DD has recently had hers removed so she had corn on the cob, carrot sticks, very crusty bread,an apple and chewy sweets. There wasn't much else she couldn't eat with her brace in.
She also was lucky and had no discomfort when her braces were adjusted.

Once the initial discomfort has worn off she will be able to eat as normal (except for chewing gum, toffees etc)

Dd has massive braces plus turbo bite blocks behind her front teeth. She literally couldn't chew for nearly four weeks as the blocks prevented her closing her jaw fully.

She was on mash and soup for a week and after that managed absolutely everything. The only thing I tell her to avoid is toffees or sticky chewy sweets, mainly because of the threat of decay. My orthodontist said she could eat anything except sugary stuff! If it breaks you just pop back and get it fixed.

Dd had bacon after a week! She just cut it into tiny pieces. You are overthinking this.

I'm sure you've got the wrong end of the stick somewhere, OP. I had (very expensive) braces for three years and ate everything, apart from tightening days where chewy food was painful. The odd lecture off the orthodontist for not brushing my teeth after every meal, but there were no dietary restrictions. There were perhaps restrictions on toffees or things like fruit leathers for obvious reasons (absolutely impossible to get off from around the hardware), but I never ate those sorts of things anyway.

Dd eats most things but avoids sticky sweets, gum, corn on the cob, whole apples. She can eat pizza but has to be careful with the crusts. She eats curry, lasagne, burgers, pasta, etc. Just give her what she normally eats but modify if there are hard bits that will harm the brace. What's wrong with bacon btw??

Omelettes : spanish or normal
Stews
Spag bol / any baked pasta dish
Fish with steamed veg
in fact anything that does not crunch.

When I had braces I had wires dotted around the roof of my mouth so was limited to soft foods for periods
but I found that most things cut up small worked OK.

The two days after the wires were tightened I tended to live on eggs in one form or another.

Admittedly I've never ever been able to have chewing gum again after accidentally getting some caught in a wire and tasting it for a week !!

It’s really painful for the first month and then whenever you have them tightened (I had them aged 11 and am wearing them again now in my 30’s) so high calorie mushy foods (I just plowed through ice cream and martinis but you prob want something appropriate), soups and stews and smoothies obviously, mash normal and sweet potato

Once the soreness wears off, the only things I avoid are hard nuts (I put up with the uncomfortableness of cashews cos they’re lovely) toffee, chewing gum, and I have to avoid turmeric and beetroot because I have ceramics that will stain

Have to say though I wasn’t eating a huge amount of meat before but getting braces turned me into a pescatarian - the chewiness of meat and getting it stuck really put me off. Am now a pescatarian but also don’t eat dairy or eggs so a Pesci-vegan for want of a better word!!!

Oh yeah I also can’t really eat apples, French baguette crusty style bread, or corn on the Cobb

You’re prob not getting any recipes just because there’s not actually that much you end up needing to avoid but for example I had this for dinner tonight which was delicious and so so filling

My friend needed extensive braces. He was on soft food for a few days after but then switched back to normal food. He would be on soft food for a day or two everytime they were tightened.

Having such a restricted diet for two years seems extreme, even for extensive braces but having said that, I am not an orthodontist.

If after a few weeks it is really becoming a strjggle to find food, maybe consult with a different orthodontist about what can and be can't be eaten. It could be that this one is just really strict and over the top.

Soft foods in the meantime though;
Omelette
Pasta
Sandwiches with soft fillings
Scrambled eggs
Risotto
Chicken and salad
Filled wraps
