is already a keep and very good baker.
want to steer away from treats towards food...

so I'm looking for something not too babyish but also not too complicated (and expensive).

I didn't start cooking until I moved into non catering university accomodation. I'd thoroughly recommend taking a look at student cook books online. Usually cheap and cheerful and explain techniques etc.

My daughter (who never cooked) took Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food to university with her and has used it non-stop.

I agree about the Delia How To Cook books.

If your DC become really serious about food, I would recommend Michel Roux Jnr's The French Kitchen.

Donal Skeehan is fantastic
He is really young, very into Youtube, blogging etc.
Quick easy but interesting recipes

My teens tend to use the internet more than cookbooks - we have the Sam Stern book but it gets very little use.

The NOSH books seem good. My son at uni has actually made stuff from it! They do a whole range.
