What would you include in a ploughman’s? Trying to decide if I should stay traditional or add a few more ‘interesting’ bits.

Some good strong sharp cheddar, pickle, nice wholemeal/seeded bread buttered with real butter (not mayo and absolutely never spead) and an apple cut into slices.

Anything else might well be delicious but isn't a ploughmans

I think traditional is good. Some freshly cut ham, good cheese. With the addition of a really lovely chutney.

I grew up in a very rural area, and as a joke the local pub did a ploughman's lunch of fish fingers and chips, on the basis that's what the ploughman ate every day!

Pickled onions! I'd be devastated if I got a Ploughman's without proper pickled onions (not the weeny silverskins, proper big ones).

Stay traditional and for me that means just cheese, no ham. Bread, butter, pickled onion, chutney and a whole apple.

Mine (and what I am having for tea tonight)
Hunk of fresh bread with proper butter, ideally Lurpak
Hunk of Cheddar so strong it cuts the roof of your mouth
Grapes
Celery
Garners pickled onions and red cabbage

It would be improved further by:
a veggie sausage roll
a rock hard conference pear

Depends on the occasion, I like to add bits and pieces to cater for all tastes. Good, fresh bread and butter, pickle, pickled onion, cheese, apple are all a must but to give more options I also add ham, celery, grapes, tomatoes, homemade sausage rolls or fingers of quiche, something kettle chip like, I guess you could add pate on to that if it’s your thing, (personally can’t stand it!). To be honest I don’t worry too much about what a dish is called!

thanks for the replies...traditional looks to be the most popular!
