Oh I do love a cottage pie!
Beef mince fried with a chopped onion. When browned/soft, add a pint of beef stock with tomato puree, worcestershire sauce, mixed herbs and salt and pepper. Add a chopped carrot and frozen peas. When the peas are split it's cooked. Drain the gravy off and put in a casserole dish with mashed potatoes mixed with cabbage/kale. Stick under the grill if the meat is hot or in the oven for 40 minutes if not. Serve with the drained off gravy. Lush.

When I make anything with beef mince I always use about 75% beef to 25% pork. Makes a huge difference to flavour and texture.

Ooh thank you. I’ve never added thickener to the sauce smile

Try this Delia one it's cottages not shepherds but it's lush:

Chuck some beetroot in your sauce and cauliflower & garlic mash on top - could even add some soft cheese too

I think shepherds pie is nicer and mixes things up a bit; use lamb mince instead of beef.

I have a recipe for a really nice indian spiced sherpherds (not cottage sorry) pie with sweet potato topping instead of normal mash. Will try and dig it out!

A friend of mine adds a good dollop of Branston pickle to hers.

Add a bit of ground cinnamon to it, a la Delia. Really tasty.

Mushrooms in the mince.
Grated cheddar on top.
Having it tonight. No mushrooms. I forgot! We call it shepherds though I've never done it with lamb!
I'm doing weightwatchers and my recipe is very points friendly smile

The best ones I make come from leftovers from the roast - using the gravy and leftover carrots etc. Worth buying a bigger roast as it is so much nicer than mince.
