Eat good food cos it TASTES nice, not cos you think that otherwise insidious chemicals will do something bad

oh i desrve a flaming from the lentil weavers, I have broken rank, i am sorry, but aaaargh!

and don't get me started on ecos and their anti-radiation paint...

The problem is that the Major food producers are inherently evil and will try everything and push every legal boundary possible to increase their profits. They couldn't give a monkeys if their food is borderline toxic as long as it is cheap to produce

Check out this article in the Tmes today as a small example of why although all the health food stuff/holier than thou stuff is irritating , it is vital to have an alternative. Article here

I love Reiki myself

I wanted a necklace with a green pendant and couldn't find one in the shops, so my sis found someone online who makes to order and had one designed.
It's very pretty, but the leaflet in the box says it's been imbued by the maker with love and healing energy specifically for my needs, and will cleanse my blood and aid the function of my kidneys.

Pretty good for a couple of beads on a string from a woman I've never spoken to or emailed when the only thing she knows about me is I have a pair of green trousers...

I used to share a flat with a woman who did vegetarian food combining. She ate nothing but vegetable soup until about 9pm when she would gorge on jacket potatoes and other carbohydrates. She suffered from indigestion . So instead of thinking that maybe her eating plan wasn't exactly helping, she went to see a 'holistic practitioner' who charged her 70 quid and gave her a bag of marigold tea...

i think what irritates me is that a lot of it looks like a con trick for the gulliable

and it also encourgaes this kind of fear of life thing a bit, i think

and some of it, eg some herbs, are downright dangerous.

My MIL lives her entire life by herbalist remedies, homeopathy and spiritual healing (reiki etc). Bores the living shite out of me and she is always ill with something (although, interestingly doctors can never actually find anything wrong with her, and she is there at least twice a month). She eats like a cross between a rabbit and a cat (soya this, tons of veg) BUT...

All her food is cheap crap from Lidl (Value, pile all the old crap into it, brand) and she is always belching and farting. DD1 recently exclaimed in the car "OMG what is that smell of onions - it's so strong!" to which MIL (sitting in the front and facing the other way) replied "Sorry, I just belched there".

Think I'd rather live on pizza

(Not really, but you get the point)

Agree with your various rants, Filly.

Just eat good seasonal food, stop stressing and you'll enjoy life more and be healthy. You could go on and on worrying about stuff and it's true that 'green living' is big (and getting bigger daily) business

Did anyone watch the Bullshit Detectives last week? Since watching it I've decided I'm going to open a crystal-healing clinic and make lots of money

Filly how do you knit cheaply - I worked out that to knit one adult cardigan in a book I have it would cost me more than £100

"Natural" reaaaallly bugs me when it's put on products. I like to spend money on good food, I go for free range stuff and organic stuff because I do care about the way it's produced and animal welfare etc. But I can't stand it when they put "natural goodness" "as nature intended" "contains only natural ingredients" etc on things like shampoo and cereal etc. FGS, why are people so very, very stupid that they fail to reember that natural does not, in any possible way, and never did, necessarily mean good for you? Arsenic is natural, botulism is natural, so are deadly moulds and parasites which we kill using cvhemicals, thereby saving many lives; malaria is natural, deadly nightshade is blimmin natural. I just can't understand why people still fall for this. Especiually when it comes to things like herbal medicines that really can be very dangerous.

Excellent thread FJ!

Oh and as for crystal healing et al - or new age wanky bollecks as it's known in our house. makes me larf. My sister is into all that stuff - despite being highly intelligent - and is always spouting endless crap about how all doctors are evil and have an ulterior motive, and yet some uncertified wild-eyed quack waving an enema tube, well they're worth chucking 150 quid at (and she always says very seriously "I think it [i.e. having a pumpkin juice enema or a crystal waved in her face] is something I really deserve to do for myself"

aaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggh

However I would say that once these things are proved to have a useful effect I don't diss them. There is some very interesting genuine scientific research into homeopathy and if it could really be true that water has "memory", for example, and acupuncture has a very strong track record. It's when people just ignore the obvious facts of the matter that I get so riled.

I think it's BBC3 10pm on Tuesdays and 9pm on Thursdays. Last week's was fecking hilarious when the fake crystal-healer put a 'crystal' (actually a Werther's Original) on the patients' stomachs and they all said it had helped relieve their pain!
