Lamb -3 days past 'use by'

Would you use it if it smelled ok? Have been unable to get the dried chickpeas to make Jamie’s slow cooked lamb. Finally found them today, got all my bits together for cooking tomorrow & realise the lamb (vacuum packed Tesco) is ‘use by’ 2 days ago. 😖 If it smelled ok, would you go ahead?

No

lumleyy · 09/10/2017 19:53

yes it’s only two days and if it smells okay!

Wolfiefan · 09/10/2017 19:54

No. You can't smell everything that could make you very ill.

CandyMelts · 09/10/2017 19:59

Would usually say trust your nose but I had 1 day out of life lamb yesterday and spent a while in the bathroom today Blush

picklemepopcorn · 09/10/2017 20:03

I would. Cook thoroughly...

jenniuol · 09/10/2017 20:29

No, I wouldn’t.

somewhereovertherain · 09/10/2017 20:31

Yep no issues.

silkybear · 09/10/2017 20:33

yep i would!

RandomUsernameHere · 09/10/2017 20:33

Yes if cooked to a high temp

FiveShelties · 09/10/2017 20:35

As long as you do not need to go far from the bathroom over the next couple of days you could risk it Grin

Just the thought that it may be off would stop me from using it.

SaigonSaigon · 09/10/2017 20:40

I'd probably not take the risk for the sake of a few quid.

cdtaylornats · 09/10/2017 21:02

I'd eat it. If it looks and smells okay it'll be fine.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 09/10/2017 21:08

It will be absolutely fine - especially if it's slow cooked through. Use by dates are for guidance only. So much perfectly good food gets wasted because of them. If it smells fine it would be a waste of perfectly good lamb to bin it!

Floptom · 21/10/2017 17:56

Yes, particularly for a slow cooked (thoroughly) dish such as the one you have in mind (I might not risk it with a rare steak for example!).

If you’re serving to little ones or other ‘vulnerable’ groups then use your instinct and judgement after cooking as to whether safe or not. I’d wager that an average healthy adult would be fine with the dish you are planning.

I tend to agree with Biscay that way too much food is wasted due to over cautiousness about best before and also use by dates.

Trust yourself and enjoy! Sounds yum.
