Tuna pasta sauce recipe please (for DC)

minipie · 29/09/2017 23:18

As above, I don't like tinned tuna but the DC love tuna pasta sauce when cooked by others so I'm going to give it a go. Any foolproof recipes please, ideally with lots of veg or which I can add veg to?

Olive oil in a pan, crushed garlic on low heat and then 6-8 cut anchovies that you let melt in the oil. A bottle of good quality italian passata, then 2 tins of drained tuna. Salt and pepper. Cover leaving a 1 cm gap on low heat for 15/20 min
The only veg that you could add that work on the flavour combination would be cappers and/or olives.

I do almost exactly as Kingirving above but with slight variations including a big pinch of cinnamon and some lemon juice. It's a Jamie Oliver recipe from the 30 mins book, pasta puttanesca. I have very fussy children and they all love it.

I make a cheese sauce, then add a tin of chopped tomatoes, some seasoning and then the tuna, pasta and some sweetcorn.
You can eat it like that or can then put it in the oven topped with cheese and crushed crisps for a bit.

I put cooked pasta, tinned tuna, sweet corn and cover it with a white sauce

The colemans packet is yummy. It's with sweetcorn too.

I make a white sauce and then throw in a tin or two of tuna. You can add all sorts of veg but sweet corn, diced peppers, onion and peas would be my go to. That or just the sweetcorn but have boiled veg or salad on the side like mac 'n cheese.

thanks! Sound like it's a choice between tomato based or white sauce based. DD1 would like tomato and Dd2 would like white... Wonder if I can do tomato and cream...?

I'll look up the Colemans one too

Go for the best of both worlds andturninto tuna pasta bake. Make with a tomato based sauce with red onion, red peppers, garlic and chilli if you like it. Good glug of balsamic, plenty of black pepper. Pour into oven proof dish. Mix grated cheese, a bit of English mustard and creme fraiche and spoon a fairly shallow layer over the pasta. Finish off with a layer of breadcrumbs and grated mozzarella.

Sounds good Monday but I'm really looing for something I can batch cook and have in the freezer for quick teas - sometimes I might turn into pasta bake but needs to be a sauce that can also be eaten as is iyswim

Either a standard white sauce to which you can add peas, sweetcorn and/or broccoli florets, and grated cheese or a tomato sauce from tinned tomatoes add to fried onion, chopped peppers, diced courgette and so on. Mary Berry has a quick recipe.

I make tomato sauce with onion, passata, garlic and oregano that I then blend and batch freeze. I use it for home made pizza. And for tuna pasta bake I just add to tinned tuna, sweetcorn and top with cheese.

I normally fry a chopped onion & garlic in a little olive oil, then add chopped courgette & red pepper & fry for a minute or so. I then add a tin of chopped tomatoes, a teaspoon of balsamic vinegar & teaspoon of mixed herbs. Add the tinned tuna & some tomatoe purée & leave to simmer while I cook the pasta. Serve with grated cheese on top. My DCs love it.

I will defo be doing some of those recipes above when I have time.

However...here is my quick fix.

Make your own pasta sauce. Make a base of olive oil, garlic, tinned plum tomatoes and some herbs (eg. oregano, basil and marjoram). I usually do a batch of 10-12 tin tomatoes. Then either oven bake peppers and aubergines in olive oil or steam broccoli, carrots, spinach and any other leftover veg and add to your tomato base. Blend to a puree. Season.

Buy massive ice cube trays or use small food bags. I use baby food freezer cubes and freeze individual portions. Keep in freezer as your base. I have a whole drawer full of this for emergencies. I use it for pasta sauces, cannelloni and lasagna.

Buy tinned crab, tuna, mackerel and sardines preferably in olive oil. When you need a quick dinner, boil pasta, defrost pasta sauce and then dump tin of one of the above on the pasta and sauce and mix. Grate parmesan on top.

My children love this. Their favourite dinner is actually a tin of mackerel in olive oil dumped on boiled potatoes.

This serves 4, super easy and very tasty.
2x oil based tuna tins, personally I like it with more tuna chunks so use 3, but most others use 2.
1x onion, medium
1-2 tsp Lemon pepper, according to taste.
1-2 tsp Tarragon, according to taste.
200 ml sour cream

Served with tagliatelle.

  1. Put pan to medium heat, drain the oil from the tins into the pan. Put tagliatelle to cook in boiling water.
  2. When oil is warm, add finely chopped onions.
  3. Glaze the onions in the oil for a couple minutes, do not brown.
  4. Add the tins of tuna, give it a stir.
  5. Add sour cream and blend it in.
  6. Add the spices tarragon and lemon pepper, less lemon pepper than tarragon. Mix well and let simmer until pasta is done.

Left overs make a nice sandwich topper. Know its not what op asked for but it is a tuna dish worth trying :-)

Use cream of tomato soup! It's delish! Annabell karmel has a nice toddler recipe where she does this and then tops with a white sauce mixed with mushrooms and cheese and then bakes. Older kids would like it too!
