Breakfast ideas for child who won't eat cereal

thepatchworkcat · 26/08/2017 18:33

Four year old doesn't like cereal (occasionally dry shreddies or coco pops are tolerated). He ends up eating lots of bready things and then being hungry (so he says!) all morning. He's starting school soon and I really feel I should be giving him healthier/heartier breakfasts!

He currently eats
Bagels
Mini brioche
Jam
Toast
Spanish tortilla

He doesn't like:
Cheese
Bananas
Porridge

Any suggestions outside of the (breakfast) box would be most welcome!

All foods that aren't cereal

We try not to do cereal, I manage for myself but the DCs have it once a week or so. Porridge more often.

But I think the point is to stop thinking of breakfast as a separate meal that needs special foods. That idea came from cereals.

It's just another meal, so all foods that aren't cereal.

Chicken ham cheese eggs nuts
Vegetables legumes mushrooms
Bread rice pasta grains
Fresh fruit, dried fruit and seeds
Preserves and pickles

Eggs in various forms

Toast - peanut butter/nutella

Cold meats and cheese

Fruit and full fat natural yogurt

Cereals aren't the best breakfast anyhow - a bit of protein will fill up for longer.

I like Bird's Eye classic pancakes (frozen). They defrost in 30 secs and then warm up in the toaster. I have them with fruit and yoghurt. No mess, no fuss. They do have sugar in them though, so they wouldn't be good for savoury accompaniments.

Agree with the pp who said we should stop thinking that breakfast needs to consist of special breakfast food. Just ask him what he feels like eating!

My DCs like croissant with ham and cheese.

So many replies, thank you! You're right - it doesn't have to be a 'breakfast food' does it?! I think that's what I'm trying to do with the Spanish tortilla idea so I just need to extend that a bit further. And defo agree re cereal - I don't mind him not eating it as it's generally pretty bad. Do wish he'd eat porridge though.

Hard boiled egg and toast
Pancakes - I make these (sugar free) on the weekend and DAD eats the leftovers for the next few breakfasts, usually with peanut butter and a smear of Nutella.

Frozen potato waffles do very well in the toaster.
Then you could put beans, egg or ham on them.
Or just ketchup

Waffles in the toaster?! This might be a game changer. Thank you!

Waffles in the toaster is aw3some. Clearly it would depend on the toaster but I put mine on full twice and then they are just gorgeous.

I put cheese on mine and then chilli mayo but now I'm veering away from breakfast help and just babbling about guilty pleasure foods Grin

Putting curry powder in your beans before you heat them and then having the beans on the waffles with cheese is also a firm fave of mine.

And left over spat bol or chilli goes like a dream on waffles.

Back to the breakfast help.

What about hummus? With veg or toasted pitta.

I love toasting a couple of pitta and then ripping it into pieces to dip in the hummus.

I must be hungrhungry. I'll shut up now Grin

My DD's favourite is what she calls the triple B: bacon & baked beans Grin Sometimes beans on toast, or homemade pancakes or shop bought scotch pancakes in toaster, sometimes an egg or what she calls a mixed up: cut up veg / fruit & yogurt.

Dd likes bacon or sausage on a bread roll
croissant or pain au chocolat
breakfast muffins
Banana bread (with nutella) or malt loaf
Pretty much anything other than cereal tbh

Don't think he'll go for flapjack, doesn't like oats or nuts Hmm He's really not a fussy eater and eats plenty but he does have a few things he won't even consider and it's quite annoying!

Japanese just eat left over supper/dinner for breakfast

TBH I think we as a nation need to get away from pudding type foods for breakfast and just eat lunch and dinner foodstuffs
