Help! I am ill and have lost half a stone and look foul - how do I put it back on again asap?

Yes, yes, I realise you will all hate me but what the hell.

I have some weird throat infection, had it since last week, am on antibiotics.

Can't tolerate food much, unless I force it down under duress and have been living on bananas and smoothies.

What can I shove in to bump up the calories until my tablets work and my infection clears up and my throat does not contain razorblades?

Thanks

My sister was underweight during her teens and the gp suggested a slice of choc cake before bed. But if you're throat is sore i guess ice cream might be the way to go

you could also put full fat cream into your smoothies if you can stomach that. Things like rice pudding might be soothing. Lots of creamy soup...

Cream in puddings
Mayo in sandwiches
Chips from the chippy with battered sausages
Full fat milk as your main drink. You can get those Nutri drinks but they are a bit mank.
Complan just tastes like milkshakes - I believe you can buy soups called 'Buildup' which are choca with cals too, but to be honest you would be just as well putting butter in normal soup.

Don't worry too much about the food

Fresh air, brisk walking will give you rosy cheeks, do your hair, put some slap on

The weight will come back with a bit of time

Could you face macaroni/cauliflour cheese if there was enough sauce? Sorry you're not well

Miserable for you, but you would do much better to just eat healthily and let it go back on slowly

you will do all sorts of odd things to your metabolism if you basically starve and then binge, which is what not being able to eat and then swallowing a load of cream would really be doing

plus a ton of saturated fat is not good for anyone, ill or otherwise

you'll be back to normal pretty quickly as soon as your throat is better - and until then, just eat whatever you can bear to eat that doesn't hurt

yogurt, avocado, smoothies all nice and slippery and nutritious

I have some frozen berries for my smoothies so my vitamins are ok but I feel dreadful

the doctor, get this for a laugh, told me to "rest my voice"

I looked at her and pointed at my girls and said "er, RIGHT"

idiot

sympathy

I had that from a GP too - how exactly am I supposed to control two pre-schoolers without speaking? Engage them in Pictionary?

I used to get pharingitis a lot as a teenager and Mum would always make me some "crispy jelly", basically jelly that had been put in the freezer until the top couple of inches had frozen (you do have to check it every hour or so, otherwise you end up with the mother of all ice pops, without the stick). It was "soooo" soothing and would be the only thing I could consume some days. It really did work wonders.

oooh sympathy Ive had this a couple of times too and it is indeed the absolute pits, the pain is just grim.

Compared with other sh*tty illnesses - I once had pneumonia and pleurisy at the same time - I'd rather have that again than pharyngitis.

geekgrrl · 19/03/2007 21:45
