Best gammon recipe

I have a big gammon joint to feed the extended family who are coming to visit.

What will delight my guests? Boil or roast? Do I need to soak it first?

What would you serve with it?

I soak it overnight.
Then boil it for an hour (keep the liquid for stock/soup)
Then I roast it to dry it out and make burnt edges yum.

I boil for ten min to get the salt out then roast with a maple syrup glaze- just shoved in a roasting tin with a bit of rosemary and maple syrup. I serve with sweet potato mash, green beans and roasted squash with the glaze dribbled on top on the meal at the end. Red cabbage goes with it a treat too.

I don't soak. Cook in cider with an onion, carrot and celery for required cooking time. Remove from cider and cool a bit. Remove the skin, mix up English mustard powder and marmalade, smear all over and roast in hot often until caramelised.

My goodness these sound delicious. I'm wondering as it's warm whether to serve with salad. Would that be weird?

Soak overnight if it's smoked, not otherwise. Boil fit half the cooking time, then carefully remove the rind only. Score the fat diagonally both wAys so you end up with a diamond pattern. Stick a clove in to each join of the diamond and then cover all the fat with brown sugar.
Roast for the second half of the time.
Absolutely delicious hot or cold and yes, salad is perfect if it's cold!

Absolutely serve with salad if it's hot! And lovely fresh crusty bread

I just roast mine and serve with salad and jacket spuds. Yum.

This is yummy! You can boil it the night before and just glaze/bake when you need it.

i do like nigellas ham in coke (or cherry coke).

I basically do the same as TheFallenMadonna ie cooked in cider, then baked, except use dark brown sugar instead of marmalade (although marmalade sounds like a great idea!). All these recipes are based on the Delia Christmas classic. I think the cider gives it a lovely richness but looking on-line she suggests a different method here but linking anyway because lots of useful info included.

Of course Nigella also does the classic ham baked in cocoa cola.

If you are in the UK and experiencing sunny weather, then I would personally cook in advance and serve cold with beautiful green salad and new pots with butter and parsley etc. Can't beat it! And often tastes even better the next day!

As above I cook in full fat coke (diet does not work).

I add an onion, couple of cloves, peppercorns and a bay leaf.

Glaze with black treacle.

Honestly it's bloody heavenly.

It's a recipe from the Deep South in the US.

Also it's as good, if not better, cold that hot.

I do it every year on Boxing Day (and a few other times in the year).

Gammon cooked in cherry coke? What kind of sorcery is this?
I am feeling the jersey royals, salad and crusty bread with it.
Thanks all.

I boil my ham in a couple of tablespoons of black treacle, peppercorns, cloves and bay leaf. I imagine the effect is similar to coke, though I've never tried coke. It is delicious anyway.
