How am I supposed to cook low cholesterol for dh when....

.... he doesn't like fish
doesn't like game
doesn't like root veg or green leafy veg apart from broccoli

And why should I even bother when he will happily eat a burger for lunch on work days and sits there after dinner scoffing chocolate?

offer no alternatives and buy some of that chlosterol lowereing thingame bob in little bottles.

Lots of sympathy though - altering dp diet has been an uphill struggle all the way!

Does that mean that he likes, peas, broad beans, sweetcorn, peppers, mushrooms, squashes, courgettes, onion, garlic, tomatoes, Aubergine, pulses, and Fennel. I'm sure there are plenty more, but they sprang to mind.
Also Oats, if you can get him to eat porridge or even just raw oats every morning. Thats a really good start

You know, he's really starting to strike me as rather fussy.
You're right about the oats - luckily he is up for oat-eating in any form. Jacket pots is another one we never do but could - thanks.

I used to eat quorn when I was vegetarian but haven't had it for years.
Can you get it unflavoured? The stuff I remember was always meant to taste of some meat or other.

I get the 'mince' effect one and the 'chicken' effect one - my dc's prefer it to meat.

I think you can get vegetable protein unflavoured but not quorn.

I use it instead of meat in bolognaise etc and always goes down well.

I'm not being fair to him really - if I make something out of the aforementioned ingredients he does eat it, he just looks extremely miserable and depressed about it (more than is really justified, IYSWIM.)

The quorn pieces are supposed to be like chicken but imo they have no real flavour. Does he like curry? If so quorn pieces are excellent for this. Don't use any oil, just dry fry the vegetables - if you chop them very finely hopefully he won't notice them - add the dried spices (not curry paste which has loads of oil) then a tin of chopped tomatoes for the sauce.

Some veggie burgers are quite high in fat but quorn burgers are quite good and you can disguise them by adding some salsa on top. You could make your own burgers with very lean mince which would be healthier than the ones he is probably buying and taste better too.

Oh and tell him that high cholesterol(sp?) will affect his sexual performance. Might make him keener on fruit and veg

Thanks Chopchopbusybusy. The curry is a good idea.

He actually eats loads of fruit and veg, specially fruit - it's just that there are so many he doesn't like that it limits what I can make. He would happily eat broccoli and carrots every day.

The protein element is the biggest problem as once you've cut out the cheese and red meat that he shouldn't eat plus the fish and game that he doesn't like you're pretty much left with chicken and the occasional bit of tofu (as long as it's not smoked).

You could also try veg soup or avocados; chickpeas and lentils have some protein in them and reduce cholesterol, ditto beans and eggs.

Sorry eggs don't reduce cholesterol! - but they are a source of protein. I think 2/3 eggs per week is fine.

I don't know how high his cholesterol is, but my dh is borderline, so he still eats meat, even red sometimes. We just buy lean cuts and he cuts any excess fat off.
We have gone down the pulses route too, and he does seem to enjoy more of a variety of vegetables now we are focusing on them more.

Hmm, maybe I should think seriously about pulses then.

I love 'em myself and have lots of recipes from my 10 years of vegetarianism.
When I've done them before he's not been particularly enthusiastic, but not as gloomy as the fish seems to make him.
