Yes it should be much cheaper, and (if local produce too) more varied and more tasty.

We are in the process of weaning ourselves off supermarkets at the moment. We are getting there - we have great local stuff around here and it is cheaper, especially organic.

I assume the same goes for meat if you can find a good butcher ?

I went to the village shops last week because I just couldn't face the hassle of the supermarket with the two kids. Instead they really enjoyed the variety/novelty of going into different shops.

I was really pleasantly surprised that the fruit and veg was much cheaper, fantastic quality and it lasted longer.

I get it at school. Abel and Cole do a scheme and the school makes 25%.

Greengrocers for us - I don't know about the price but the quality is 100% better. Also we but it almost every day instead of stocking up once a week and then having it sit in the fridge all week, losing vitamins.

We have the biggest indoor market in Wales near where we live, buy all my fruit and veg from there.

And most of meat and seafood come to think of it.

Local produce tastes so much better.

I also get most of mine as a box delivery from an organic farm but then usually top oit up from our nearest supermarket - Booths(which does at least stock a good range of local produce)

Market here, much cheaper, your local shop will be too and usually have more local produce and better quality as unlike supermarkets don't buy as much bulk so tends to be fresher.

Sometimes I go to the supermarket if I'm low on time like this past week but I usually go to the farmer's market. Its much cheaper and certainly better quality.

I use local shop - cheaper for most things and better quality for most things, although their peppers can sometimes be a bit bleugh.

We've a good green-grocer in town who sources a lot of local produce and a farmers market which has a limited selection of in-season veg but has fantastic pick-your-own stuff in the summer.

I use an organic box scheme for most of my fruit and veg; sometimes supplemented by veg from the local grocers. Much fresher tasting IMO.

I would love to be able to get vegetables from a local fruit and veg shop. We have a good one in our area, but we are in the country and it is 7 miles away. As a London commuter I am pleased that there are still barrows near lots of tube stations where I can buy the fruit I eat at work and that some of them sell vegetables so that I can top up on broccoli etc mid week. Otherwise, it is once a week in the supermarket.

Local veg shops and local organic box scheme are both cheaper for us than the supermarket fruit and veg. And they taste better.
