Cheap ways of using up flour?

ifonly4 · 17/01/2017 17:24

Have just been going through my food, and have two bagseach of self raising and plain flour (think DD bought two of them one day when I was working). We need to cut back on our spending and just trying to think of cheap things to make with the flour so it's not wasted (ie things that don't require expensive ingredients). Any ideas please.

Pancakes. Very versatile, can be an extra to whatever else you have planned for a meal, or a snack or pudding.

Basic sponge cake - fine with just a bit of jam spread on it.

Rock cakes? I can't exactly remember since its been DECADES since I made them but don't you just use double the flour you'd use to make fairy cakes?

Scones as well. All kinds of scones. Cheesey scones and fruity scones. Yum.

Cakes.
A pot of plain or light coloured fruit * yoghurt, one egg, sunflower oil, sugar, SR flour and whatever goodies you feel like (choc drops, nuts, dried fruit left over from Xmas, pieces of apple). Depending on the amount of flour/sugar/oil you put it turns out spongey or sconey but it always works for me.

  • I once put a purple yoghurt in and the cake was grey Shock. Still edible, though.

Thanks everyone. There are things you've suggested that seem so obvious - I've made a list so I can concentrate on using the flour up making different things. I haven't had rock cakes for years but I remember they were easy.

Chapatis with the plain four, onion bajis with the self raising ( although we tend to call the pakora more often in Scotland)

I make a huge pile of onion bajis once or twice a month, the family love them, very cheap to make, eat with a chill and a yogurt dipping sauce and salad. Very filling.

Pizza dough. Mozzarella and yeast are cheap in Aldi.

Scotch pancakes for self-raising flour! Just milk and eggs :)

I was also going to suggest chapatis or tortillas as they are just flour and water.
