what can I use instead of cayenne pepper?

Just tempted on making the tuna pasta as recommended on here. Noticed it uses cayenne pepper. DD is allergic to all peppers and so I presume I should avoid chilli and cayenne as they are part of the pepper family. Any sugestions on anything else I could use to add to the sauce instead that I may have in the cupboard? I know the sauce will probably be nice without but fancied something to add for a change.

Paprika?

Hmm, I think paprika is made from peppers, too, though, isn't it?

is it a tomato based sauce?

could you go for a sweetcorn / creamy sauce instead?

A splash of Worcester sauce, though you would have to check it doesn't contain anything your dd is allergic to.

oh I havnt looked into paprika yet. oh hope its not to do with peppers aswell! Thanks mateychops, will have to check that one out. As for it being a tomatoe sauce, no its not as shes allergic to them too and sweetcorn lol. yep foods getting pretty dull these days. Thanks for your help though. Its basicly a cheese type sauce so prob best to eat it as it is after all

Thanks Kathy but not sure if she can have that either.Has to be free from any nut contamination risk also. Not sure now what worcester sauce contains. Havnt seen any in my nut free booklets/lists but if anyone knows then let me know.

Paprika is capsicum too - just checked in the wonderful Harold McGee Encyclopaedia of Food and Cooking, so probably best avoided

Well lucycat she tends to live off veggies and cuts of meats with bisto. cheese sauces too. but not carrots or green beans, allergic to those also. Basicly cant buy much pre made things, need to make from scratch. Being allergic to maize/corn means I try to steer clear of thickened things as they contain maize starches ect. Bit tricky really. Have to have my little lists of no go foods now lol else I forget some!
Only nut allergy is life threatening. Shes not to eat seeds or coconut either. This is due to her nut allergy. Also cant eat banana or kiwi. Think thats it, but also suspicious of oats or barley but not sure, iffy. Needs testing

So you could go for homemade chicken nuggets? meatballs? burgers?

homemade pizza with a tuna and cheesey topping?

is she ok with wheat?

y'know some people complain about their lo's not choosing to eat things but when your dd can't eat so many foods it must sooo difficult!

Yeah very very hard. Good job she is not fussy! Yes we do make lamb burgers but my chicken nuggets had paprika in them lol. Meatballs bit tricky without tomato type sauce as she cant have that now. pizza I can do but have to use tomato free topping using buternut squash recipe ect. I presume she is ok with wheat as was skin prick tested long time ago and was clear. However getting lots of funny reactions lately so keeping a food diary!

I do my pizza's without a tomato topping as my dd's don't like it, we put on what they like, which in their case is ham, sweetcorn (a no go for you) and cheese to stick it all on lol

could you cook the meatballs in the oven and use your bisto as a topping? I'd like them like that!!

What about herbs? I use parsley in loads of things to give them a bit of taste. Particularly fish or meaty things. A handful in stew somehow finishes it off...

Yeah I suppose I could try that. I used to make a chicken type meat ball with cheese in which we used to have the tomato passata with before her allergy. But could try perhaps a different type meat ball with bisto. Good idea.Have you got any good meat ball recipes? ah and you make pizza's without tomato anyway, is it ok then. I could always fall back on that then if i havnt ever got the sauce made. bril thanks for your ideas

thanks hotandbothered, I am definately going to have to try a few different touches like that. Yeah will grab some parsley next time and add it to some sauce for a change.

Thinking about it - my dd will eat just about anything hidden under parsley sauce!
Can your dd have soya sauce? Different sorts of cheeses have quite different tastes too - just discovered dd loves sheeps cheese cos its creamy.

Really, ok thats interesting different cheeses. Soya sauce, not sure. Depends what the ingredients are and whether I can get one guaranteed nut free.

Splash of soy sauce? A bit high in salt but I guess a splash won't hurt.

My meat balls are very basic, just mince, finely chopped onion and breadcrumbs, squish together into a ball. I use the same recipe for my basic burgers too.

If your dd prefers it I sometimes use the food processor to make the mixture very smooth.
