Suggestions for new year - bird?

Hello all

Having eight for New Year's Eve dinner (including DH and me). It's a very friendly group so will be relaxed but we like to go formal for the evening - because on how many occasions do you get an excuse to wear black tie and have a sit down three course meal...

Am struggling with what to do for the main event. Everyone there will have had chicken, beef or both over Christmas, so I thought goose - but looking in the shops it's so flaming expensive!

So, a few questions:

  • first, does goose get much cheaper after Christmas Day?!
  • are there other bird suggestions others would recommend - pheasant (and how not to make it dry)? Poultry and gamey bird recommendations very welcome...

Thanks!

KK

I think you may struggle to feed 8 from 1 goose so doubly expensive!

We did goose for 9 a few years ago. Made lots of trimmings to make it go further and then had excessive leftovers.

We always have steak pie on New Year's Day. It's traditional.

You could fancy one up (or make fancy individual ones) for a dinner party.

Game pie? Home made hot water pastry looks amazing.
